Grade 5 - November 8 / 2018

A wild week of adventures for the grade 5s! We got wet at Lake St. George for the provocation of our new unit Where We Are in Place and Time. We explored connections between our visit to the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Lake St George and the First Nations of Canada. We will be starting our unit with an exploration of the First Nations of Canada across canada. The different Nations that came to be and how they lived pre-contact.

On Wednesday, we met with our Grade 5 parents, to discuss the upcoming trip to Norval. If you would like further information please don’t hesitate to get intouch with Andrea Lossing, Jill Baptist or Barb Prevedello.

Congratulations on a wonderful performance of “Imagine” by John Lennon at Remembrance Day Assembly today.

In PHE, the Grade 5’s have been working on fitness. We have discussed the four components of fitness (cardiorespiratory, flexibility, muscular strength, and muscular endurance) and are performing exercises that improve all of these areas. The students have also created a fitness goal using the SMART goal framework. Student goals either focused on a specific fitness skill or a sport skill. If they have chosen a sport skill, students were to elaborate on how the components of fitness will help them achieve their goal. Students have been brainstorming why people are motivated to participate in physical activity and are reflecting on what motivates them.

This week in Art, the Grade 5s continued to work on their animal totems. Some students created their design on a large canvas using black paint. Others began adding colour to their pieces using fabric dye.

In Math, we will be continuing to look at Transformations and looking for patterns in our everyday lives.

With the conclusion of Bootleg this week we look forward to exploring Historical Fiction Novels in our second round of Book Clubs. Keep an eye out for the historical fiction novels coming home next week.

Our writing continues to grow while we explore various perspectives in writing and start to write narrative stories. We will be working on putting dialogue and excitement into our stories.

Our next contest will be taking place Wednesday November 14th, 2018 at 8:30 AM in the cafeteria.

The next interactive question will be the DOTS game. This can be accessed on our Games/History page. It will not be accessible one day before the contest and not during the 2 contest days because the web site can be used to solve the contest question and because when some parts of the world still have Tuesday, other parts have already Wednesday, i.e. contest day.
