Grade 5 - December 8 / 2017

On Wednesday, we visited the Middle School. The first portion of our visit was participating in a mini Pinewood Derby. The students created and raced Lego derby cars. They had a chance to race their cars against other teams and redesign and enhance as best they could. The were working on the question: How does design affect performance? Ms. Gin, Middle School Principal welcomed us during the second part of the visit. The students visited a grade 6 classroom and were introduced to Mr. Blair, Middle School Counsellor and Ms. O’Dywer, Middle School Learning Resource Teacher. The students had a fantastic time, experiencing the new school and being introduced to new teachers and programmes. They will have the chance to visit a few more times throughout the year.

Genius Hour: Students were introduced to the Genius Hour on Wednesday. They will have picked a passion they want to know and inquire about by Friday. Next week, the students will research their passion. The third and final week, they will present their passion. Have a look at slide 7. The videos give great inspiration and two of them are shown above.

In French, we began our final story of the term. Here is the link to the online silent video (shown above) that students can use at home to practise re-telling the story.

The Grade 5s will visit the Living Arts Centre on Wednesday, Dec. 13.

Winter temperatures have arrived. During the school day, students in Grades 1 - 5 are outside for recess three times a day and at the end of the day for pick up/aftercare.

To fully enjoy the excitement that the winter season brings, appropriate winter clothing will enhance their outdoor experience.

Students in Grades 1-3 are expected to wear winter coats, snow pants, hat, mittens/gloves and waterproof winter boots at each recess. Even if it is dry and there is no snow, it is still cold. As it warms up, snow pants can be replaced by rain pants, rain boots and a lighter jacket. The clothing is standard for this age group.

Grade 4 and 5 students are expected to make good choices in the clothing they wear outside for recess. Once outside, they are not permitted to go back inside to get pieces of clothing that they forgot to put on. We encourage them to be responsible for their choices.
