HIGHLIGHTS

Unit

The 3D bridges are almost complete. A few minor adjustments are being approved by our amazing tech teacher Mr. Shaikh, then off to the 3D printers! Did you know it takes an average of 20 hours to print just one bridge?

Our next unit will fall under the theme of Sharing the Planet. We will be focussing on a Genius Hour approach to this unit. Students will be selecting a topic they are passionate about and want to learn and research more about within the theme of Sharing the Planet. (1. Rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things. 2. Communities and the relationships within and between them. 3. Access to equal opportunities. 4. Peace and conflict.) This unit will end with a mini presentation of the students passion. It is a pre - exhibition project that will get the students excited to develop their research, presentation skills along with beginning to think about how Action takes place in a unit.

Language

Language: Mystery Fiction Literature Circles have come to an end this week. Word Wizard is a popular activity amongst the groups. Students will now to be able to continue using word wizard strategies throughout the whole book and not just the week it is assigned :)

The students have enjoyed our book club meetings and we have discussed what it might look like to all be reading the same book vs. all different. The students have enjoyed learning about different books and are getting excited to read more but are also looking forward to having conversations around the plot and the same characters while reading the same books.

In the next Literature Circle round students will be reading the same novel within their group. Stay tuned for the fun activities that will go along with this round of Literature Circles.

The Harris Burdick Mysteries are still in the editing stage.

Math

We have begun our unit on Fractions. IXL sections J, K, L, M have been assigned for homework to help with all things fractions. Equivalent fractions and comparing and ordering have been the focus this week and into next week. Using fractions in everyday life often helps with the concepts. Use fraction language at home when dividing up dinners and desserts, thinking about minutes with homework, portioning out the different homework items on the agenda and the minutes.

Art

This week in Art, the Grade 5s used their knowledge of bridges to create detailed line drawing of famous bridges from around the world. They first used thin Sharpie marker and painted their work with watercolour paint.

Music

In Music, students are sharpening their rhythm skills in preparation for the annual CIS winter classic on our music literacy tool - Breezin Thru Theory. The competition will begin in a few weeks. Students have access to this from home also if they would like to continue to improve their response time once 100% accuracy is achieved in Rhythm Rocks! Username: yorkschool, Password: wood246.

PHE

In PHE, students have been exploring target games. These include bocce ball, bowling, pinball bench ball, castle ball, and spike ball. Students are working on successfully throwing or striking an object. Tactical problems related to target games include shot selection, judging distance, preventing points, and protecting the shot.

LOOKING AHEAD

We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, February 13th. Students do not have to exchange cards but if they do, we ask that they include everyone in their class.

GLOBAL PATHWAYS SCHOOL

Each year a group of grade 11's travel to India during March Break to volunteer at Global Pathways School. We have a special connection with the school as the founders of the school are the previous Head of York School and Head of the Junior School. Currently a past Grade 9 ICE teacher, Jim Brickell, is the Principal of Global Pathways School.

The students travelling to GPS enjoy two weeks of volunteering in the classrooms, taking field trips with the classes, enjoying recess on the play structures that have been donated by The York School community and spend time with students in the classes and their homes.

Before departing on this adventure we collect donations to take with us in duffle bags to hand out to the community. This years' wish list is here. If you have any of the following items stored away in your closets and are looking to find a new home for these items, please bring them to The York School, there are bins in the Gathering Place to deposit the items. We will be collecting these items until Monday, February 25th. Many thanks in advance for your donations.
