Grade 5 - February 14 / 2019

REMINDERS

Grade 5 has been busy this week as we wrap up our How the World Works unit and our 3D bridges. We looked at weather and forces and talked about how gravity works in supporting bridges as well.

Share the Planet unit starts next week and we will explore the idea of Genius Hour. We will be asking the students to think about what it is they are interested in looking at and further researching as a topic. It will be an introduction to an independent research study project. More information to come next week.

In math we continue to work on fractions. We will maintain a focus on equivalence and ordering for the next week.

Please remember to try some practice questions on IXL

Next week in lit circles we will be discussing building a vocabulary list in our reading journals so that we can easily access it while we edit and revise our mystery stories.

HIGHLIGHTS

In Music, students are sharpening their rhythm skills in preparation for the annual CIS winter classic on our music literacy tool - Breezin Thru Theory. The competition will begin in a few weeks. Students have access to this from home also if they would like to continue to improve their response time once 100% accuracy is achieved in Rhythm Rocks! Username: yorkschool, Password: wood246. For G5 CISMF participants only -  Our first off-site rehearsal is at St Andrew’s College on Tuesday, Feb 19th. We will depart school at 8.45am and return by 3.30pm. Students will need to bring a packed lunch with a water bottle. Students on the meal plan will receive a bagged lunch. Here is the link to the trip form.

Art

This week in Art we welcome Vanessa Emer back from maternity leave

French

This week in class for a Valentine’s Day activity we wrote about things we like. Students chose one thing and wrote it on a big poster that is now on our classroom door. (see image below) Check it out as you pass by!

How you can encourage students to speak French at home:

Get your children to express what they like or dislike. This can be done with food items, activities and lots more.

Ex. I like chocolate. J’aime le chocolat.

I dislike chocolate. Je n’aime pas le chocolat.

Students are strongly encouraged to sign into the AIM Portal at home to practice their lines for the upcoming filming of our play “Le Bistro des animaux.”

How to login:

  • Password: grade5

Next week, students will finish filming their puppet shows for our play “Le Bistro des animaux.” Check out your kids work on SeeSaw. Once all groups are finished this task we will start practicing and preparing for filming the final production.

Merci,
Mme. Evelyn

GLOBAL PATHWAYS SCHOOL

Each year a group of grade 11's travel to India during March Break to volunteer at Global Pathways School. We have a special connection with the school as the founders of the school are the previous Head of York School and Head of the Junior School. Currently a past Grade 9 ICE teacher, Jim Brickell, is the Principal of Global Pathways School.

The students travelling to GPS enjoy two weeks of volunteering in the classrooms, taking field trips with the classes, enjoying recess on the play structures that have been donated by The York School community and spend time with students in the classes and their homes.

Before departing on this adventure we collect donations to take with us in duffle bags to hand out to the community. This years' wish list is here. If you have any of the following items stored away in your closets and are looking to find a new home for these items, please bring them to The York School, there are bins in the Gathering Place to deposit the items. We will be collecting these items until Monday, February 25th. Many thanks in advance for your donations.
