Grade 5 - March 1 / 2019

HIGHLIGHTS

We are deep into Genius Hour this week. We have topics ranging from

  • PLASTIC. What it is? (How it's made?) and why is it bad for the environment?

  • WASTE MANAGEMENT and how we throw out garbage and where does it go.

  • ENERGY SOURCES - renewable vs non-renewable.

  • CARBON and POLLUTION and what are companies doing to stop it.

Literacy

Lit circle activities can be found on the Life in Grade 5 workspace. We are drawing pictures of our characters’ bedrooms, imagining what their dream vacations might be, and creating dioramas of our favourite scenes!

Our first drafts of our Harris Burdick stories are finished and we are working on self-editing and using our peers to help revise even more!

Math

In Math, we have explored equivalence, ordering and comparing fractions and now even how fractions relate to decimals!

This week we used number lines and pictures to show comparisons and we started to look into finding common denominators.  -- Check out IXL for extra practice with this.

PHE

In PHE this week, we began our badminton unit. Students learned the rules of the court, different style shots, and how to serve. We will begin to play badminton games next week while also beginning our Health unit on Awareness and Action. We will explore advertisements, what influences us in the media, identify personal and social factors that affect our decisions, and identify people and support services that can assist children in difficult situations and to help them make positive choices. If you could please send to school one or two magazines to help support this unit, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

MUSIC

In Music students are participating in the Breezin Thru Theory CIS Winter Classic. This annual fun competition flexes students rhythmic knowledge and the winning school in each level are recognised with a certificate of achievement at the upcoming CISMF concert at Roy Thomson Hall in April. Here is the link to the contest. No login necessary, students just select our school and play on any device.  Here is where we started this week.

Art

The Art department is in need of some new collage materials. If you have any magazines or picture books you are looking to recycle, please send them to school with your child as an art room donation. Thank you in advance for your ongoing support!

French

Students are strongly encouraged to sign into the AIM Portal at home to practice their lines for the upcoming filming of our play “Le Bistro des animaux.”

Next week, students are going to be filming their final performances for our play “Le Bistro des animaux.” This is very exciting because the students have been working all year in preparation for this moment. The students have been putting together a list of things they need for their performance and are encouraged to bring everything to class Monday or the day of their performance. Performances will be filmed in class and sent to parents.

Here is the scheduled days of the performance so students are prepared.
