Grade 5 - March 8 / 2019

We are noticing many students are arriving late to school. They are missing O Canada, announcements and the mindful moment. 8:15 AM-8:30 AM is an important part of the day to ensure they are ready for the day and feeling settled. Please ensure your child arrives on time at 8:15 AM.

A gentle reminder that all student absences should be emailed to
As well, if your child arrives late, please have them sign in with Ms Kate or reception.

Barb will be away for the week after March Break as she will be travelling to India with a group of Senior School students. Jennifer Thompson will be here for the week.

The PYP exhibition begins on March 25th. We will be working with the theme of Who we are. The students will do a deep dive into their why, interests, passions, and purpose. During the first week back after the break, as a provocation, we will be hosting a variety of speakers from The York School staff to The York School parents to outside visitors. They will be talking about their passions and how or why they became interested in these passions. If you are interested in sharing a passion, a wonder, an issue or an interest please let either Grade 5 teacher know.

When we return we will be starting a math unit around measurement, area, perimeter, and volume. If you are interested in having a preview, please feel free to explore IXL sections V and Z.

In PHE we had great discussions about how advertisements potentially influence our decisions, whether it be food, beauty, fashion, or other potential decisions. Students listed a number of methods advertisements use to persuade such as celebrity endorsements, contests, special effects, and playing on emotions. We will continue these discussions after the March Break and will look into the personal and social factors that affect our decisions. Students also had a enjoyed playing badminton these past few weeks. We will revisit net and wall games in the third term. Lastly, a reminder that students must be prepared with their gym uniform and athletic shoes at every PHE class.

Have a wonderful March Break!

Congrats to grade 5 students on their wonderful effort in the CIS Winter Classic Breezin’ Thru Theory Rhythm Rocks contest. The results are in and The York School is the first runner up, which is a great accomplishment. The overall winners are St Andrew's College. Well done G5 for all your efforts and we will be transferring all of this knowledge in our composition and a new instrumental performance in the spring.
