JK - November 3 / 2017

Weekly Highlights:

The JKs had a great time with all the Halloween festivities; a big thank you to all the parents who took time to come in and help us. The afternoon ran very smoothly because of all your help. Thank you as well for coming in for parent-teacher interviews; it was so nice speaking to you about your child. Please remember that if at any time you have any questions or concerns, contact us.

This week the children began to present their play collage. These presentations allowed the students to develop two skill sets, the skills of being a presenter and the skill of being an audience member. The presenters focussed on speaking in a loud, clear voice and keeping their bodies facing the group. The audience members practised active listening, and learning how to formulate questions to ask after the presentation. The children that didn’t present this week will present early next week.

In French, the students have been practising their numbers from one to twenty and reviewing their days of the week. Les chiffres de 1 a 20

In Music, students are continuing to sing on their own and are finding their ‘head voice’ - an appropriate pitch range for their age and stage of development. Students are building their confidence and taking turns being leaders in circle and line games, without the teacher.

This week in Art, students added the finishing touches to their carpet designs. The finished pieces showcase each student’s knowledge of line and pattern.

Looking Ahead:

Nutrition Committee
Are you interested in becoming the next Chair of our Nutrition Committee? Now is the time to put your name forward to join a group of parents, teachers, administrators and food service providers to lead conversations about healthy eating at our Junior School. If you are interested please contact Jennifer Wyatt at jwyatt@yorkschool.com

Birthday Treat Policy
On another note, we are delighted with the changes we have made to the Birthday Treat policy. Each child celebrating their birthday will be made to feel special by their classroom community and teachers on their special day but without a treat accompaniment.

We will also be celebrating birthdays as a whole school on three occasions during the school year - November 29 for all birthdays celebrated during the months of August, September, October and November; March 28 for all birthdays celebrated during the months of December, January, February and March; and, June 6 for all birthdays celebrated during the months of April, May, June and July.

In lieu of individual families providing the treat for their child on their special day, the school will be providing mini cupcakes from Sweets From the Earth, which will be free of gluten, nuts, tree nuts, dairy and egg. Our food service provider, Aramark have sourced these treats so that all of our children can enjoy together.

Thank you for keeping our food policy in mind when preparing your child’s healthy snacks. Please do not send in any Halloween candy.

We have noticed that there are still a couple of children that don’t have a complete change of clothes at school for emergency use. Please check their bags and replace if necessary, also check that your children have a season-appropriate change of clothes. Please note that their change of clothes should be labelled. We are also noticing that there are many identical boots, so please be sure to label.
