Dear Junior School Parents,
Thank you to all the families that joined us for our parent feedback meetings over the past week. We received lots of great feedback on what we are doing well and suggestions for areas where we can do even better.
For those parents that were unable to join us, we would like to offer you an opportunity to add your voices. During the meetings we asked for feedback through the following "compass points" lenses:
N - what information do you Need to know
S - what Support do you need? From whom?
E - what Excites you about the Junior School?
W - what are you Worried about?
If you would like to provide your feedback, please send it to Kate Boynton at firstname.lastname@example.org (JS Admin Assistant) an email with the NSEW headline by Wednesday, January 31st.
We look forward to sharing the feedback from all parents in the FLASH next week and scheduling a meeting for all Junior School parents to follow up with next steps.
Thank you for being partners in your children's education.
Valerie and Struan
This week we watched videos and read books about shapes that we see in our environment. We also played Eye Spy with My Little Eye, where children had to search for shapes in the classroom that match our description. In language, we continue to work on activities that promote sound symbol recognition, building and reading three-letter words, encouraging children to add their own text wherever possible, and reading early readers. In our JK language programme, we work with each child at their level and encouraged them to reach their fullest potential. This week we started the unit, How We Express Ourselves. The central idea for this unit is, “Through literature, imagination is used for extending thinking and creativity.” This week we focussed on the line of inquiry regarding our unique imagination.
In French, we have started a new play called Petit Poussin. This play is about a little chick who leaves his family to explore the world.
In PSE classes this term, we will focus on self-regulation. Using the tool of a speedometer as a visual and the phrase, “How is my engine running?”, we will explore the different states of our body - too slow, too fast and just right. We will then explore different ways of changing from one engine state to another, using mindful breathing, exercise, and drawing.
Parent-teacher interviews are just around the corner - February 7th and February 13th. Please note that you can select the length of the interview based on the number of blocks you pick. Standard length is 15 minutes (3 blocks) with homeroom teachers and 5 minutes (one block) with the specialist. On both Wednesday, February 7th and Tuesday, February 13th there will be an early dismissal. JK/SK students will be dismissed at 1:45 PM.
Valentine's Day is also quickly approaching! If your child shows an interest in making Valentine’s Day cards, we ask that you make cards for the entire class. We want to ensure that all the children feel included and cared for. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask Ms. Meg or Ms. Maria.
We are looking for parent support for our Great Canadian Skating Afternoon. Please email either Meg or Maria if you are able to help out on the afternoon of February 15. We will be going skating and would love for you to join us on the ice if possible to help your child skate. The teachers and children will be going to the rink by school bus and then returning to school to enjoy hot chocolate and a treat in the cafeteria. Please note that in order to go on the ice, skates are mandatory. Let us know if you will be able to join us so that we can properly plan for this outing. Also note that all children planning to skate must wear a helmet. If children do not have any skates, they will still attend and watch from the side of the rink.
India - Global Pathways School Donation Drive
This week we will be kick starting our India donation drive (clothes and toys). Bins will be placed by fireplace in the Gathering Place for donation drop off. Please take a look at our "wish list" link below. This list will also be posted in each classroom and communicated in the FLASH for the next few weeks.
Great Canadian Skating Afternoon
The JK- grade 2 classes will be going on a trip to Ramsden Park on Thursday, February 15th for our annual skating afternoon. As well, your child must have the appropriate winter clothing, such as snow pants, hats and mittens.
