Dear Junior School Families,
A very warm welcome back to school. We’ve had a great week of learning together, seeing old friends, making new friends and getting into our classroom and school routines. The energy level in the Junior School was outstanding this past week and, along with the hot weather, made for lots of fun!
We were thrilled to hear how many of our Junior School students completed their homework over the summer - turning off their technology, getting outside to play and reading as many books as possible. We all hope this homework continues throughout the school year.
We have many new faces in our community this year - students, staff and parents and we look forward to everyone feeling a warm, positive community spirit in the coming weeks. We have a number of new teachers joining us at the Junior School as well as a few changes from the summer. We warmly welcome to The York School:
Ms. Yochabel DeGiorgio - JK
Ms. Sarah Akbari - SK Associate
Mr. Sean Rand - Grade 2
Mr. Griffin Daoust - Grades 1-5 Associate
Ms. Sue Grey - Learning Strategies (SK - Grade 2)
Ms. Katherine Cornacchia - Learning Strategies (Grade 5) and PHE (Grades 4-5)
Ms. Lara Ilick - French (Grades 3-5)
Ms. Melissa Hickey - Art (JK-SK)
We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Jackie Birch back from her maternity leave to Grade 4!
In this edition of the FLASH we have included lots of important information:
Junior School Pick-Up and Drop-Off routines (Please see information below)
As we foster independence and introduce school routines, we ask of parents the following:
If you walk your child(ren) into the school or pick them up, please do so in the reception area. Grades 1-5 parents should refrain from going upstairs unless there is an exceptional circumstance as all students should proceed to/be in the playground area.
Allow your child(ren) to carry their own backpacks. This fosters independence and responsibility.
Make plans ahead of time for pick-up, drop-off and play dates. Students will not be permitted to use the school phone to make playdates.
We look forward to welcoming all parents to our Junior School Curriculum Night on Thursday Sept. 13th at 7:00pm where we will introduce our staff, share our learning goals for the year and have you meet your child(ren)’s teachers and hear about the learning in the classrooms.
In the meantime, as a reminder to our returning parents and for the benefit of our new parents regarding the leadership of the Junior School, we want you to know that we deeply value the home-school partnership and want to ensure that communication is clear, consistent and collaborative.
We (Val and Struan) share the leadership of the school together - this means that should you have a question or concern, we encourage you to address it with your child’s teacher first. If your question or concern is about curriculum, please contact Karen McCallum-Ryan (email@example.com) our Junior School Director of Curriculum. If you have a question or concern about something else related to your child, please contact Val and/or Struan to set up a call or meeting.
We wish a you a great weekend and look forward to seeing you at Curriculum Night if not before.
Val & Struan
Val Turner - Junior School Vice-Principal
Struan Robertson - Deputy Head Academics and Junior School Principal
Drop-off and Pick-up
Drop-off and pick-up at the Junior School is a very busy time. As a community, we must work together and help each other to ensure the safety of our students. Welcome to JK! We have had a great few days getting to know your children. We enjoyed hearing about their summer activities, and seeing them draw pictures of their adventures. We enjoyed attending the whole school assembly on Tuesday afternoon where students new to The York School were introduced.
We have a wonderful Associate Teacher in JK this year named Violeta Chon. Her time will be split equally each day between both JK classes.
Please note on your child’s timetable when they will be having PHE. On those days, the children come to school wearing their PHE uniform. Also, please return library books on the days the children have it scheduled.
Please ensure that your child has extra clothing in their cubbies at school including, socks and underwear. We also ask that you have a pair of shoes strictly for indoor wear (running shoes with summer uniform, black shoes with winter), as well as whatever outdoor footwear they come to school in (rubber boots, winter boots, running shoes, etc.).
Junior School Food Policy
Although the children are all on the meal plan which includes two light snacks, we do recommend sending extra snacks if you know that your child gets hungry throughout the day or is a “particular” eater.
Kindergarten Drop Off Policy
To foster your child’s independence, the Discovery Zone is closed to parents and caregivers.
Children will be dropped off in the back playground with their backpacks or in the Gathering Space if the weather is inclement. At every occasion, we want to encourage student independence and responsibility.
If arriving late, (after 9:00 a.m.), Ms. Sara or Ms. Violeta will meet students outside of the Discovery Zone. If you need to speak with your child’s teacher, please make an appointment, email or call.
Kindergarten Pick Up Policy
At 3:30 p.m., students can be picked up from the playground or outside of the Discovery Zone. If your child needs to be picked up early, please let the teacher know ahead of time. We will ensure that your child is ready and waiting in the Gathering Place, supervised by reception.
If you need to speak with your child’s teacher, please make an appointment, email or call.
