The first full week of school was a great success! The children are comfortable with the busy routine and enjoy all their classes. Although some of the children seemed a bit tired by the end of the week, they continued to show their enthusiasm right up until it was time to go home.
This week the JK’s were introduced to “Handwriting Without Tears” (more information linked here) and worked with MAT MAN. We introduced practical life activities, worked on name printing, and drew a self-portraits. Our morning meetings focussed on making and establishing our essential agreements. We also had our first Social Emotional Learning class with Ms. Faba where she read stories about how children like to play and making friends.
We also introduced and discussed our first unit, Who We Are, with the central idea being Play Allows us to Communicate and Investigate. The children shared what their favourite type of play is at home and at school. We also looked at pictures of play from around the world and the children shared their thoughts and questions about the pictures. We discussed and examined how great games can be created by using our imagination!
This week the children enjoyed exploring patterns and observing patterns in their environment. We will continue to explore patterns, build patterns and work with activities that promote numeration.
This week in art, the Junior Kindergarten classes continue to explore our materials in the art classroom. Investigation of watercolour paints has provided students with a hands-on look at colour mixing, all inspired by the story Sky Colour by Peter Reynolds. Moving forward, students will have the opportunity to develop their fine-motor skills through beading, sculpting, and weaving.
In Music, we are exploring beat and rhythm by moving to sounds of the drum. We learned a partner song all about making new friends.
Next week we will focus on how we play and what we like to play with. We will start making connections to our home, and looking at the differences between how we play at school and home. We will be even asking our students to bring in their favourite toy from home!
Junior School Food Policy
Although the children are all on the meal plan which includes two light snacks, we do recommend sending extra snacks if you know that your child gets hungry throughout the day or is a “particular” eater.
Kindergarten Drop Off Policy
To foster your child’s independence, the Discovery Zone is closed to parents and caregivers.
Children will be dropped off in the back playground with their backpacks or in the Gathering Space if the weather is inclement. At every occasion, we want to encourage student independence and responsibility.
If arriving late, (after 9:00 a.m.), Ms. Sara or Ms. Violeta will meet students outside of the Discovery Zone. If you need to speak with your child’s teacher, please make an appointment, email or call.
Kindergarten Pick Up Policy
At 3:30 p.m., students can be picked up from the playground or outside of the Discovery Zone. If your child needs to be picked up early, please let the teacher know ahead of time. We will ensure that your child is ready and waiting in the Gathering Place, supervised by reception.
If you need to speak with your child’s teacher, please make an appointment, email or call.
Please make sure to check The York School’s full school calendar regularly for updates, locations and times.
