We continue to work on sound/symbol association, listening for and identifying initial sounds in words and working with activities using moveable alphabet. As we continue to investigate patterns, the children are attempting to continue a pattern and make up their own patterns for others to try to continue. We are also exploring how we can show and document a pattern. The children have also enjoyed making patterns with their bodies (ex. clapping, stomping, clapping). We have also started to sequence according to different attributes such as shortest to tallest, thickest to thinnest, and colour.
We continue to explore different types of play around the world. This week we played a game from Kenya that the children loved. We discussed and examined how great games can be created by using your imagination! We have also begun to look at how each child likes to play while at school and how to make new friends while you are playing.
This week we discussed the line of inquiry “How we communicate through play.” We will be helping the children to work on strategies on how they can stand up for themselves, applying behaviours that enhance well-being, comfort, and acceptance for themselves and others.
This week in art, the Junior Kindergarten classes continue to explore our materials in the art classroom as part of their inquiry into the meaning and purpose of play. Investigation of watercolour paints has provided students with a hands-on look at colour mixing, all inspired by the story Sky Colour by Peter Reynolds. Students are travelling to art centers around the room (sculpting, beading, cutting/pasting, painting/sketching) to further their knowledge and skills before we begin a project early next week.
This week, Ms. Melissa asked: What do you love about art? Students’ responses were documented; individual students choose their favourite beads to hang above their workspace as creative inspiration for projects to come.
Moving forward, students will have the opportunity to develop their fine-motor skills through beading, sculpting, and weaving.
In Music, we are exploring beat and rhythm by moving to sounds of the drum. We learned a partner song all about making new friends.
In French, the students have been the learning basic words needed to function in the first few weeks of French class. The students have also heard our new play, Le lievre et la tortue (The Turtle and the Hare).
Next week we will begin to learn about how we communicate through play, as this is our second line of inquiry for our unit Who We Are. We will continue to work on creating and extending patterns and sorting by varying attributes. Ms. Maria and Ms. Yochabel will continue working one-on-one with the children in both Math and Language doing diagnostic assessment.
Cultivate Reading and Storytelling
Scholastic Book Clubs are an easy way for you and your child to choose and buy suitable books to read at home. The leaflets feature a wide range of books to suit everyone. You will also see that most books are half-price or less! And with every order placed, your JK class earns free books for their personal classroom library. The new Autumn 2018 Scholastic Book Clubs leaflet has been sent home in your child’s backpack this week. We hope that you and your child will enjoy browsing through the leaflet – it is a great way to encourage your child to widen their reading experience. The due date to have the form back is Friday September 28th. There will be an envelope outside your classroom for collection. Please be sure to include your child’s name on each order form. If you are ordering as a gift for your child, just let us know so that we may give it to you privately. Thank you in advance!
Junior School Food Policy
Although the children are all on the meal plan which includes two light snacks, we do recommend sending extra snacks if you know that your child gets hungry throughout the day or is a “particular” eater.
Kindergarten Drop Off Policy
To foster your child’s independence, the Discovery Zone is closed to parents and caregivers.
Children will be dropped off in the back playground with their backpacks or in the Gathering Space if the weather is inclement. At every occasion, we want to encourage student independence and responsibility.
If arriving late, (after 9:00 a.m.), Ms. Sara or Ms. Violeta will meet students outside of the Discovery Zone. If you need to speak with your child’s teacher, please make an appointment, email or call.
Kindergarten Pick Up Policy
At 3:30 p.m., students can be picked up from the playground or outside of the Discovery Zone. If your child needs to be picked up early, please let the teacher know ahead of time. We will ensure that your child is ready and waiting in the Gathering Place, supervised by reception.
