JK - December 14 / 2018

Integrating our Language/French/Drama/Music Units, our talented students have been working on a play Le lievre et la tortue (The Tortoise and the Hare). Anyone prepared for some cuteness overload can watch it by clicking the image link below.

The children have been very busy this week with preparations for our Holiday concert, filming their french play and finishing up work in the classroom. In small groups, we chose an animal of interest and researched what it was doing for the winter. The children drew a picture of what their chosen animal was presently doing.

The children have been busy enjoying math games involving rolling dice, playing with cards and counting. The goal of working with dice and cards is to solidify the children’s concept of numbers in an engaging manner. The children continue to work on letter formations and are encouraged to write in different contexts around the room. We have been using our mini whiteboards to practise making words and letters. If you are working with your child at home, please remind them about the proper pencil grip and to start their letters at the top.

The students were filmed performing their play, Le lievre et la tortue. Watch the video above!

The JKs continue to practice their songs and dances for the Harmony Concert on December 21st. We would like students to wear their long-sleeved green sweater with the white shirt for the concert. If they don’t have a sweater, the green cardigan or the long-sleeved green polo shirt will also work.

Next week we will all enjoy a full week of “spirit week” activities. Please be sure to look at the daily schedule that is planned for the week. Every day will be a bit different.

Students in Grades 1 - 3 are expected to have and wear a coat, snow pants, hats, mittens and boots to keep them both warm and dry from the time of the first snowfall or as of December 1, whichever comes first, for all outdoor recess play times.

Students in Grades 4 and 5 are expected to have and wear the winter gear they feel they need to keep them both warm and dry during outdoor recess play times. Students in Grades 4 and 5 will not be permitted to stay inside for recess if they have forgotten or chosen not to bring their gear to school.  They will also not be permitted to go back inside the school to get their gear if they have chosen to leave it inside their cubby.

On Thursday, December 20, 2018, at 1:00 PM Junior School students in Grade 1-5 will walk and JK/SK will take a bus to 1320 for a rehearsal for the Harmony concert. On Friday, December 21, 2018, at 9:30 AM, Junior School students in Grade 1-5 will walk and JK/SK will take a bus to 1320 to participant in the Harmony concert!

As you may have noticed, some of the children’s snow pants are going home quite dirty. The playground can get very muddy, especially on a sunny day. Please consider having your child wear black or dark splash pants while there is no snow. Don’t worry if you think they may not be warm enough, they get very hot playing so hard. The splash pants do a great job at keeping them warm.

Please make sure to check The York School’s full school calendar regularly for updates, locations and times.
