Both classes have been reading many stories--both fiction and nonfiction--about animals and more specifically, Canadian animals in the winter. These texts have introduced the students to new vocabulary such as migration, adaptation, habitats and hibernation. We have been extremely impressed with how the students have been able to use these new words in their own descriptions.
This week we continued to look at numbers, patterns and sorting according to different attributes. The children have looked at these mathematical concepts through the lens of the unit. For example, they are sorting animals according to whether they migrate or hibernate, as well as different attributes of the animals (fur, feathers, habitats). They have also created patterns using the animal footprints!
In Art, the JKs started learning about author and illustrator Eric Carle. They began creating their Eric Carle inspired birds and practiced cutting shapes out of their painted papers. They also finished decorating their winter ornaments.
Primary French Play
In French, we filmed our play, Le lievre et la tortue. Please follow the link below to view our play.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the JK/SK Winter Music Assembly on Dec. 13, 9:30 a.m - 10:15 a.m. in the gym. The students have been practicing very hard in preparation.
On February 15, the students will be participating in Great Canadian Outdoor Day where we go skating for the afternoon at Ramsden Park. In preparation for this exciting excursion we ask that, if possible, your child try skating before the big day so they feel comfortable getting out there and participating. What a great winter holiday activity!
Spirit Week! Monday, Dec. 11th - Friday, Dec. 15th
Next week, we are celebrating Spirit Week! Please see the details below:
Students will come to school in their regular school uniforms on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. They are welcome to wear accessories that correspond with the spirit theme on those days.
Tuesday and Friday will be full spirit days. Students do not have wear their school uniform on those days and are encouraged to dress according to the spirit theme.
New Circles Clothing Drive
Next Wednesday, December 13th, we will be launching our winter clothing drive. All donations will be brought to New Circles, a not-for-profit, grass-roots agency that builds strong and caring communities by providing basic necessities to those living in poverty. They provide much needed clothing, social programs, and skill building opportunities to individuals living on a low-income, with a focus on residents of Thorncliffe Park, Flemingdon Park, Victoria Village, and Taylor-Massey (including Crescent Town), many of whom are newcomers to Canada. Here is their website for more information about the organization.
The Junior School will be collecting winter clothing items such including:
- long pants
- girls’ tights
All child, youth and adult sizes are welcome. Collection bins will be in the gathering place from Wednesday, Dec. 13th - Wednesday, Dec. 20th.
The children have been busy practicing their singing in preparation for the Music Assembly. They are getting very excited to sing for you. The assembly will take place in our gym. Looking forward to seeing you there!
Thank you for sending your child to school with all of the appropriate clothing; it makes recess a much more enjoyable experience when they are dressed warmly. We ask that you continue to practise zipping zippers and putting on snow pants/splash pants and mittens at home, as well as letting your child get dressed independently. Ms. Maria and Ms. Meg thank you in advance for your support!
Please make sure to check The York School’s full school calendar regularly for updates, locations and times.
