We continue to work on sound/symbol association, listening for and identifying initial sounds in words and working with activities using moveable alphabet. As we continue to investigate patterns, the children are attempting to continue a pattern and make up their own patterns for others to try to continue. We are also exploring how we can show and document a pattern. The children have also enjoyed making patterns with their bodies (ex. clapping, stomping, clapping). We have also started to sequence according to different attributes such as shortest to tallest, thickest to thinnest, and colour.
This week we discussed the line of inquiry, “How we play.” The children shared what their favourite type of play is at home and at school. We also looked at pictures of play from around the world and the children shared their thoughts and questions about the pictures. We discussed and examined how great games can be created by using our imagination!
In Art, the JKs learned all about our artist of the month, Jackson Pollock. Students listened to the book “Action Jackson” to learn about the artist’s life and style. The JKs then used different techniques, involving string and marbles, to create a Pollock inspired art piece. Also this week, the JKs began a fall art piece and learned about the warm colours we see when the leaves change.
This week, the students were introduced to our new play, Le lievre et la tortue (The Turtle and the Hare). The students continue to practise the new vocabulary and songs they have been learning.
A reminder that the summer uniform should be worn with running shoes. These indoor running shoes are suitable for PHE and we ask that they are left at school in the bottom of the cubby. We know that shoes and uniforms can be confusing, so please don’t hesitate to email or ask!
The JK children have been invited to attend a music assembly (at the Junior School) performed by Michael Mitchell on Friday, October 13th from 8:30 a.m. - 9:15 a.m. If you wish your child to attend, please have them here by 8:20 a.m. on that day.
The Fall 2017 Co-Curricular Programme commenced the week of September 18th and continues until December 21st.
Next week we will begin to learn about how we communicate through play, as this is our second line of inquiry for our unit Who We Are. We will continue to work on creating and extending patterns and sorting by varying attributes. Ms. Meg and Ms. Maria will continue working one-on-one with the children in both Math and Language doing diagnostic assessment.
