The children loved seeing The Kenyan Boys Choir perform on Tuesday and listening to Michael Mitchell on Friday.
The children continued to practise forming numbers this week with lots of loose materials. They have become more confident in their patterning and sorting skills and we are seeing these skills being applied when we are outside of the classroom.
Encourage your children to find and point out patterns when you are out and about this weekend! We also are continuing to reinforce all the sounds of the alphabet and for some, we are working on sounding out words phonetically. The children have enjoyed working in their Handwriting Without Tears books and are learning to colour inside the lines – a great way to hone their fine motor skills.
Art: The JKs are learning all about line! This week, students identified types of line such as straight, wavy, dashed and zig zag. They created a painting using their new knowledge and will continue to use these skills in future art pieces.
French: This week, the students have started learning the colours in French.
Music: The JKs are all singing! Although exact pitch match is a long journey, all students are distinguishing between high and low sounds. Highlights of the week include students playing games on their own, without teacher assistance.
Next week we will be starting to create our play collages, please send or email pictures of your children playing. We would ask that each child bring (or email) in 8 - 10 pictures (photocopy version, 3 x 5) that they will turn into a collage. The children will then present their collage to their peers at the beginning of November to wrap up the unit of Who We Are.
For Photo Day on the 19th, JKB has gym on a Thursday, however we ask that you send your child in proper school uniform for the photo.
There are so many play-based apps that help children develop not only their math skills but as their conceptual understanding of mathematics that are age-appropriate. Below is a list of some highly recommended apps from respected mathematics educator and researcher, Jo Boaler (@joboaler, https://www.youcubed.org/resource/parent-resources/):
We know that all the shoes can be overwhelming! Given that the weather has the potential to turn rainy, it is important that all the children have three pairs of shoes. Two pairs of inside shoes that stay at school, running shoes and black shoes and lastly a pair of outdoor running shoe that are worn to and from school and out for recess. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
Thank you to those parents who have followed the Drop Off and Pick Up policy and refrained from stepping in to the Discovery Zone during these times. We appreciate the support in our quest for independence for your children. We kindly ask that all parents follow this policy, as it can create a discrepancy and it feels unfair for the children, as they see it as some parents are allowed in and others are not. Thank you in advance for your support.
Scholastic: Thank you to everyone that placed Scholastic Orders, we will put your child’s books in their bag, as soon as they arrive.
Please make sure to check The York School’s full school calendar regularly for updates, locations and times.
