JK - February 8 / 2019

Thank you for coming out to our Parent-Teacher conferences. It was so nice to chat about your child with all of you. Please know that we are always available to speak with you, just give send us an email to make an appointment.

This week, we looked at different wordless books as a class. The students were invited to create their own story by looking at the pictures and seeing what was happening on each page. We talked about how images and pictures can tell stories, even without the use of words. We read aloud Snowmen at Night and the students wrote a response to the story by imagining what they would do if they were a snow person at night.

The children continue to work on various activities involving geometry and have been working on their very own Shape Book.

What a great Lion Dance performance. The children really enjoyed it!

In Art class, we are exploring shape. As a collaborate project, we are crafting a shape city (many interpretations of your homes are featured in the city!) Once completed, these shape cities will be on-display downstairs near Kindergarten.

In other news, Ms. Vanessa Emer will be returning from her maternity leave on Tuesday, February 19, 2019. At this time, she will resume her role teaching Grade 2-Grade 5 Visual Arts. Ms. Andrea Hughes will resume her previous role of teaching JK, SK, and Grade 1 Visual Arts. Ms. Hickey will be moving full-time to Junior Kindergarten to support Ms De Giorgio’s room on Mondays and Tuesdays, and Ms. Barnden’s room on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Violeta Chonn will mirror the schedule and spend the opposite days in the other class. Fridays will alternate.

In French, the students heard a story about animals and how they adapt to the different seasons and their environment. In particular, the children explored how certain animals hibernate in French.

In Music, the JKs are learning songs about Valentine’s Day. They have actions to a poem called “3, 5, 7, 9” and can sing a lovely song about Tony Chestnut. The JKs explored beat as we passed a frog stuffie in a game called, “On a log Mr Frog”. The students also enjoyed moving to different styles of music with multi-coloured streamers.

Thank you for your orders. Your books will be placed in your child’s backpack once they arrive.

Looking Ahead

Skating Day

Please let us know if your child will not be attending the skating afternoon. If your child will not be attending the skating part of the session please consider having them attend school for the morning as we will be having Valentine's celebrations.  We also welcome parent volunteers to meet us at the rink in order to help tie laces. Please keep in mind that adults are not allowed on the rink without skates. Many parents in attendance may choose to take their children home directly from the rink, but please let us know before leaving the rink.

With this unusually warm weather over the last couple of days, we are finding that our playground is extremely wet. Please make sure that your child has an extra set of labelled clothing in their gym bag above their cubby. Please also send in slush pants for the days that are too warm for snow pants.

Valentine's Day is also quickly approaching! If your child shows an interest in making Valentine’s Day cards, we ask that you make cards for the entire class. We will be handing out our Valentine’s on the morning of February 14th. We also want to ensure that all the children feel included and cared for. In addition, if your child is not up for writing out all of their classmate's names, they can just sign their own name. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask Ms. Yochabel or Ms. Maria.

Each year a group of grade 11's travel to India during March Break to volunteer at Global Pathways School. We have a special connection with the school as the founders of the school are the previous Head of York School and Head of the Junior School. Currently a past Grade 9 ICE teacher, Jim Brickell, is the Principal of Global Pathways School.

The students travelling to GPS enjoy two weeks of volunteering in the classrooms, taking field trips with the classes, enjoying recess on the play structures that have been donated by The York School community and spend time with students in the classes and their homes.

Before departing on this adventure we collect donations to take with us in duffle bags to hand out to the community. This years' wish list is here. If you have any of the following items stored away in your closets and are looking to find a new home for these items, please bring them to The York School, there are bins in the Gathering Place to deposit the items. We will be collecting these items until Monday, February 25th. Many thanks in advance for your donations.
