JK - March 1 / 2019

The children have been learning lots of new geometric vocabulary such as 2-D shapes, 3-D shapes, sphere, cube, rectangular prism, pyramid, cone, cylinder, ovoid and ellipsoid. It is important to be able to distinguish between 2-D and 3-D shapes, some shapes are flat and others are fat! Students have been taking pictures of items they see in their environment and speaking about them during our gathering times.

This week the children in JK A acted out the simple story of Cinderella Penguin and JK B acted out Little Red Riding Hood. I think we have some budding actors! We will be reading some fairy tales to promote storytelling and imagination when playing in the home centre or puppet theatre or writing stories in their own storybooks they have been creating.

In French, the students have been reviewing the colours in French as well as their numbers this week.

In PHE, this week the JK’s have been having fun doing partner relays, playing “Cat and Mouse”, and “What time is it Mr. Wolf?” on the scooter boards.

In Music, the JKs are enjoying the online MusicPlay games about loud/soft and high/low sounds. This week, we listened to a piece of music by Eric Satie called Gymnopedie. The students drew what they felt was happening in the music and filled in the sentence, Music is...

This week in JK, students have been learning about author and illustrator, Eric Carle. Together we read some of his books and noticed that he creates illustrations from cut paper. Students then created tie-dyed paper and began cutting out shapes which they will soon use to create a bird.

Looking Ahead

Please be sure to check to see if your child has an extra full set of clothing in their cubby (that stays at school) as children still have accidents! Also, check to see if they have the proper clothing necessary for outdoor enjoyment and that everything is labelled.

Wednesday, March 6th will be Simcoe and McClung House Colour Accessory Day. This is a reward to Simcoe for bringing in the most donations for the New Circles Clothing Drive and to McClung for winning the 'Bring It' challenge. Students in those two houses can wear red and yellow accessories with their regular uniform.

We will be sending another scholastic form out after the March break. We will keep you posted

Please make sure to check The York School’s full school calendar regularly for updates, locations and times.
