Students have continued to explore measurement through inquiring into capacity with water, length with shoes and heights with buildings. In addition, the JK students have brainstormed books that they would like to create for the incoming JK students. As we conclude our unit on Sharing the Planet, students will be taking home more plants to care for over the summer!
In Music this week, the JKs started the song “I am a Fine Musician” and used maracas, drums, sticks, and bells as they sang each verse. Congratulations to the JK musicians for singing their songs for the JK Celebration. Parents, you now know why they kept singing “Drip, Drip, Drop..” at home!
In French, the students have been practising their numbers from twenty to fifty. The students have been doing this in order to practise the date, in particular with numbers from twenty to thirty. Please follow the link to view the song that is helping them practise those numbers.
This week in Art, the JKs finished their carpet designs and began working on a collaborative art piece. Together we read ‘Hey, Wall: A Story of Art and Community’ by Susan Verde. Then students worked in groups to create their own collaborative piece on large white paper.
A gentle reminder that Before Care does NOT start until 7:30 AM. There is no supervision before that time.
With this warm weather, please make sure that your child has a sun hat and that you apply sunscreen to them before school. If you like, you may also send in sunscreen that they may re-apply themselves if necessary.
We have three important events next week:
On Monday, June 3rd students will be going to the Harbourfront Centre on a field trip to the Colourful Exploration studio! We will be leaving at 9:15 and plan to return by 12:00 pm.
Track and Field Day
On Thursday, June 6th we have our Track and Field Day. The activities will be held at Oriole Park. JK-Grade 2 students will participate in the morning from 9:00-11:00 am and Grades 3-5 in the afternoon from 1:00-3:00 pm. Students need to come to school in their PHE uniform, house shirt, and black TYS shorts. They may accessorize with house colours. Students also need to bring a water bottle, sunscreen, and a hat.
Junior School Book Drive
Next week is the Junior School Book Drive! House bins will be located in the gathering place from June 3rd - June 7th for donations. Please donate gently used books from your home library that you are finished with to give the gift of reading to someone else. All books will be donated to The Children’s Book Bank. The Children’s Book Bank is a non-profit organization located in the Regent Park area of Toronto. Gently used children’s books are donated and distributed, free of charge, to children who might not otherwise have a chance to own their own books.
Please make sure to check The York School’s full school calendar regularly for updates, locations and times.
