JK - Sept. 12 / 2019

The first full week of school was a great success! The children are comfortable with the busy routine and enjoy all their classes. Although some of the children seemed a bit tired by the end of the week, they continued to show their enthusiasm right up until it was time to go home.

This week the JK’s were introduced to “Handwriting Without Tears” (more information linked here) and worked with MAT MAN. We introduced practical life activities, worked on name printing, and drew a self-portraits. Our morning meetings focussed on making and establishing our essential agreements. JKB had their first Social Emotional Learning class with Ms. Faba where she read stories about how children like to play and making friends (JKA will have their first class next week).

We have also been focusing on Belonging and Contributing skills such as communicating with others, sharing ideas and solving small problems.

Backpacks: should be labelled and big enough to transport large items such as artwork and library books.

Water Bottles: labelled and left at school during the week. They will be sent home on Fridays for a good wash and then returned on Monday

Library: Please return library books on the days the children have it scheduled (you may accompany your child to the library daily: 8:00 to 8:30 and 3:30 - 4:00).

*Indoor Shoes: These shoes will stay at school and be worn for indoor use and PE.

PHE: Please note on your child’s timetable when they will be having PHE. On those days, the children come to school wearing their PHE uniform.

Kindergarten Pick Up Policy

At 3:30 p.m., students can be picked up from the playground or outside of the Discovery Zone. Please note that children should be picked up as close to 3:30 unless they are in the aftercare programme. If your child needs to be picked up early, please let the teacher know ahead of time. We will ensure that your child is ready and waiting in the Gathering Place, supervised by reception. Please note that aftercare is available

If you need to speak with your child’s teacher, please make an appointment, email or call.

Junior School Food Policy

Although the children are all on the meal plan which includes two light snacks, we do recommend sending extra snacks (nut free) if you know that your child gets hungry throughout the day or is a “particular” eater.

Unit of Inquiry

This week we introduced and discussed our first unit, Who We Are, with the central idea being Play Allows us to Communicate and Investigate. The children shared what their favourite type of play is at home and at school. We also looked at pictures of play from around the world and the children shared their thoughts and questions about the pictures. We discussed and examined how great games can be created by using our imagination!

This week the children enjoyed exploring patterns and observing patterns in their environment. Students explored their names and counted how many letters they see in their name. We have been counting friends in our class, spaces at centres and singing different counting songs. We will continue to explore patterns, build patterns and work with activities that promote numeration.

Welcome to Physical Education class. It was such a pleasure to meet all the wonderful JK students. In class we have been learning the rules and routines of the gym. How to safely travel around the gym and beginning to learn about space and body awareness.

In Music class, the JK students have been introduced to some non-pitched percussion instruments and started a song called Three Small Musicians. The students have been exploring the idea of play by moving (leaping, crawling, hopping, heavy, lightly) around the classroom to music. We also listened to the Baby Elephant song holding stuffies and found the beat.

This week, the students started French class for the first time. They were introduced to the ligne magique (the magic line). When the ligne magique is put on at the beginning of every class, the students are expected to only speak French except for the three allotted English words every class. At the end of class, the line is removed. It is part of the daily routine in French.  If the students succeed in only speaking in French, they receive a ticket. Every two Fridays, there is a draw with the sac a surprises (the prize bag) where two children receive a prize for only speaking French. The students were true risk-takers in French class!

Art Studio

In Art Studio, students have been sketching in their sketchbooks. These sketchbooks will remain at school until June, at which point they will come home to be shared with you. We have been exploring with watercolours this week; how do we paint? How do we take care of our tools? What happens when we mix two colours? Ms. Claire, Ms. Maria and Ms. Melissa will be collaborating on a special project in the coming weeks … stay-tuned! If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me (Melissa Hickey) at mhickey@yorkschool.com
