Middle School - September 7 / 2018

Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

Our first week back to school was filled with energy and a variety of emotions. The energy of starting a new year was noted in the classes and halls with voices, and bright faces. The emotions ranged from excitement, nervousness, happiness, and sometimes uncertainty. These are all normal for middle schoolers, both returning and newly joining us. Our faculty are attuned to 11-14 year olds, and plan for the energy and emotions that your son or daughter brings to school each day.

Our Middle School priority is to support your child’s social and emotional development by nurturing a connection to a community, igniting curiosity, and challenging students beyond their comfort zone. These efforts are evident in the curriculum, our rich co-curricular /athletic programmes, leadership opportunities and through relationships with exceptionally caring faculty. Only when students’ social and emotional development is secure can academic learning be optimized. I draw your attention to the communication practices that will support a partnership to support your child’s well being.

Communication Lines

Homeroom teacher - first point of contact for social, emotional and executive functioning (organization, timeliness, materials management) matters involving your son/daughter. As well, as school operational information.

Subject teacher - academic matters.

Learning Strategist, Jennifer Robertson - for ongoing general learning issues.

Counsellor, Glen Blair - for ongoing social, emotional issues.

Middle School Assistant, Sally Warren -  general school routines, operations, support with pick a time (student lead interviews), calendar of events.

Principal, Helen Gin - for persistent or serious matters requiring greater intervention.

Faculty can be contacted best by email, first initial followed by last name i.e. hgin@yorkschool.com. Our faculty are dedicated to the care and education of your child and will endeavour to return email /phone communication within 24 hours during the work week, Monday to Friday until 6 pm. To promote well being, faculty are not expected to respond to emails during the weekend.

Reaching your child - If you need to contact your child during the school day, you may call the middle school administrative assistant, Sally Warren who will relay the message. Students are not permitted to have their cell phones with them during the day. They are to be stowed in their locker.

Co-curricular and Athletics Participation

Next Tuesday, September 12, students will attend a club fair that will provide information about the various opportunities in the middle school at lunch or after school. A full table of offerings will be posted in the Flash next week. Athletics at the middle school endeavours to allow all students to participate regardless of prior skill level or experience. See the practice schedule below. It is not too late to join.

Friendly reminders about car drop off and pick up

To ensure our children are safe, car drop off in the morning can be made between 8:00-9:00 AM in the lane way between 1320 and 1300 Yonge street, just before the garage door. Note school starts at 8:25 AM. We will have a staff person greet your son / daughter. This laneway will take you to Woodlawn where you can drive to Yonge or Avenue Road. Please do not drop your son/daughter at the sidewalk between the two buildings, as this is a safety hazard for pedestrians and blocks traffic entering the laneway drop off. We appreciate your cooperation to this important matter.

The Middle School team is excited, prepared and committed to making the 2018-2019 academic year an awesome one.

Helen Gin
Middle School Principal

Attention All Athletes,

This is going to be a great year. For our school to make the Jump we need our athletes to train as high performance athletes.  Take a look at our athlete institute which begins September 15th with our first ever ‘athlete combine’.  This is an opportunity to work with Strength and Conditioning Coach Reid Hall and go through some athletic testing. On top of this opportunity, we are bringing in NBA Skills Coach David Nurse for four weekends and Canadian Beach Volleyball Olympian Martin Reader.  Please fill out the form and let's be our best selves.

Our annual TYS @ TFC game is being held on Sunday, October 28th at BMO Field.  The FC will take on the Atlanta United at 4:30pm. Tickets are $68 each, with a maximum order of 5.  We have limited availability so order now by clicking here.
