August 22 / 2019

Dear Parents,

I trust your summer holidays have been restful and fun.   This message provides some key essential dates and details for the first day and first week of school.

Student timetables will be ready for download during the week of August 26 via YorkNet.  You will be alerted to its availability by email. You will need your YorkNet login and password.   Please note that the class placement process began in the spring and involved a team of teachers to ensure classes are balanced.  This may mean your child’s best friends are not in their HR class. Please help your child develop resiliency by encouraging them to take the view that new opportunities in a school year can begin with new friendships.

First day

The first day of school begins on Wednesday, September 4 at 8:25 am. Students should be dressed in summer uniform.  No books, or binders are required on this first day. Please send your child with a snack and a lunch or if they wish they may make purchases from a snack trolley and cafeteria with their student account number. On the first day, student ambassadors will be present to help new and returning students find their classes.   An extended homeroom will take place to help orient students with their timetables, lockers/locks, account # etc. as well as to begin building community.

School Materials

Grade 6s will be provided with a stationary kit of supplies, however, students are to provide their own pencil cases. Grade 7s and 8s need to purchase supplies as indicated in the June report.  The list is available at this link. Please await teacher instructions in bringing materials to school. There is no need to bring supplies/text on the first day.

If you have not completed book purchases in June, orders can be made through the Canadian Book Exchange. Please visit here for the textbook store and complete your order as soon as possible. If you have any questions regarding ordering online, please contact the Canadian School Book Exchange at 1-800-335-5043.

Arrivals and Departures

Students are encouraged to walk, or take the TTC to school and arrive by 8:15 am so they can organize their school materials and socialize before homeroom begins at 8:25 am.  Students who are driven may be dropped off at the laneway (between 1320 and 1300) door. Facilities staff will be present to open the doors at 8:00 am. Students may arrive as early as 7:30 am but they will need to enter through the front door and wait in the commons area until 8:00 am.

Students are dismissed from school at 3:30 pm and parents who are picking up should arrange for a meeting spot a block north or south of the school. Please do not block our neighbour’s drive or keep your car idling.

After school:  Students are permitted, when available, to play in the gym or on the turf.  There will also be opportunities to join afterschool clubs or athletics. Students waiting for parent pick up or wish to complete school work  are permitted to wait in the learning commons until 5 pm. If students are not in a supervised activity after school, they are expected to vacate school premises by 4 pm.

Cell phones - NEW

In past years, we have permitted students 10 min at lunch to be on their phone to check in with home.  However, we have increasingly observed students on their phones playing games, on social media or taking photos. Last year, hundreds of phone infractions were logged and confiscated.  This year, cell phones are permitted only after school. Cell phones are not permitted before school or during the lunch hour. If your child needs to communicate with home and on their phone during lunch, they are permitted to use their phone in the middle school office or you may call our assistant, Ms. Warren to relay a message.

School calendar

Please log in to YorkNet to view the school calendar which indicates the school breaks, as well as two additional PD days this year.
