MS - Sept. 5 / 2019

Dear Middle School families,

Welcome back to school, and what I hope promises to be another exciting 2019-2020 school year.

I share with you a few reminders about communication protocols, curriculum night, as well as staffing updates.

School Communication

Communication is the cornerstone of effective relationships.  Here is a guide for who to contact as a first point:

  • Psycho-social emotional issues, organizational matters, and  daily school operations - MS Home room teacher

  • Subject specific matters - Subject teacher

  • Absences/lates -

  • Daily school operations and relaying messages to your child during the school day - Sally Warren, Middle School assistant, or 416 926 1325 #1111

Should you need to contact a member of staff we ask you to do so during school hours to allow faculty to recharge and prep lessons.  As well, you can expect regular communication from the faculty for any of the above identified matters when a pattern begins to develop i.e. chronic lates, incomplete work, social concerns. Should your concern require greater intervention, the MS counsellor, Glen Blair, the Learning Strategist, Katie Maziarski or the Principal will be involved.  As a middle school team, we meet regularly to discuss the well being of our students.

Curriculum Night

Please mark September 19, 7:00-8:30 pm on your calendars.  Parents are invited to visit the school and meet your child’s teachers, and hopefully feel inspired by their passion and pedagogical practices. Curriculum Night documents will be posted on YorkNet on September 13. These documents outline the details of the course, such as topics studied, assessment, student expectations and extra help.  Note students are not required to attend.

Staffing updates

Please join me in a warm welcome to the following additions to the Middle School faculty:

Jon Moore - Grade 7 HR, Grade 7 and 8  English, Humanities

Katie Maziarski - Middle School Learning Strategist

Kimberley Acres - Grade 7 French

Kathy Campbell - Grade 8 Spanish

Derek Lam - Grade 6, 7 PE

Stephanie Speers - Grade 7 Science

Kate Walker (returning from maternity leave) - Grade 6 Science and Math, Grade 7 Science and Math

Technology and Sleep

While family boundaries about technology and sleep are personal decisions, I direct you to a few sources to add to your knowledge base. I believe strongly that setting early habits at the beginning of the school year is integral for adolescent to being healthy and well, so they are in their optimum state for learning.

Sleep in Middle and Senior School students

As I have communicated in various past forums and presentations, the middle school years is a period of immense physical, social and psychological change for our students that is accompanied by mixed and intense emotions.  Expect that your child will move through this period like a see-saw, three steps forward and one step back, sometimes three steps back. We provide a supportive hand that strives to instill our school’s values of the IB learner profile, including respect and responsibility. We believe all students have the ability to grow the resilience and mindset to overcome challenges that they meet.  I value your partnership in educating your child. If you have compliments or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Have a great school year,
