MS - Sept. 12 / 2019

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Middle School Families,

I hope the first week was a smooth start for your child.  There was lots of excitement in the halls and classrooms. I share a few updates:

Curriculum Night - Thursday, September 19, 2019

7:00 - 7:30 pm: MS/SS School-wide general presentation with the Principals, Head of School, Curriculum Coordinator, Citizenship and Wellness team in the Cafeteria

7:30 - 8:15 pm: Subject teachers of each grade will present highlights of the curriculum at specific grade venues.

Grade 6 - Band room (first level),
Grade 7 - Drama Room (4th level),
Grade 8 - Fitness Area (2nd level)

8:15 - 8:30 pm Visits to Home Room classes on the 4th level
8:30- 9:00 pm Mix and Mingle with parents and faculty in the gymnasium

Please note that curriculum course overviews for each subject area will be posted on YorkNet on Friday, September 13, 2019

Also, note that the parking lot is likely to be full well before the beginning of Curriculum Night (September 19th at 7 pm) due to meetings being held at 6 pm for parents of participants who are going on the Senior School India Expedition and the Cuba Music Trip.  The TTC is the much better way that evening, but if you have to drive, consider parking in the parking garage located between Rosehill Avenue and Pleasant Boulevard.

Middle School Environment and the Code of Conduct

An optimum school learning environment is one that is safe, welcoming and inclusive.  While we strive to support these conditions, students in their learning and growth can, and will be prone to making poor decisions that impact the learning environment. To support students, a school Code of Conduct will be reviewed with all middle school HR classes by the Principal, counsellor and homeroom teachers with the objective of providing clear expectations, both boundaries and consequences.   I will be presenting this code to all MS HR classes in the coming weeks, and they will be expected to sign it. This code of conduct is linked here for your review.   I encourage all families to review this with your child.

Outdoor Education trips

To support student cohesion and connection outdoor fall trips are part of the programming to facilitate a welcoming middle school community, with activities to promote team building, social emotional learning (ie. decision making, resolving challenges, self management) and making new friendships.  All middle school grades will attend a 3 day, 2 night outdoor education trip to Camp Wanakita. The programming is lead by our Trip Coordinator, Andrea Lossing and supported by a team of outdoor education specialists, homeroom teacher and the counsellor /learning strategist.

Have a great weekend.
Sincerely,

Helen Gin
Middle School Principal

Accessing Blackboard as a Parent - Training video

Stay abreast of your child(ren)’s course materials, homework and assignment due dates

Students in the Middle School and Senior School are supported by the Blackboard Learning Management System. This online learning portal provides each student with personalized access to unit materials, weekly assignments, research tools and daily course announcements. Blackboard is updated daily by all faculty and is the first place to check should a student want to catch up following an absence or look ahead.

Blackboard can be accessed directly via yorkschool.blackboard.com or the link in YorkNet. At the beginning of each academic year parents are given “observer” role accounts so that they can also view course materials, homework and assignment due dates. Grade 6 to 12 parents can log in with the following Username: firstname+lastname (“johnsmith”) and Password: (the first 5 digits of your school accounting number). For further questions about Blackboard or to get help, please contact the I.T. Help Desk Desk at 416-926-1325 ext. 1204 or Neil Moir nmoir@yorkschool.com.

We encourage you to login with your child for an overview of their academic schedule. View the training video here
