We see our ‘community-in-action’ everyday. We saw it at the beginning of this school year with the Terry Fox run, and now, as the Junior School rehearses for the Harmony concert, we are honoured to witness it again.
We have had a fantastic few months teaching and learning alongside your children. 2019 promises to be equally spectacular.
We want to leave you with your children’s homework for the winter break.
Get outside and play
Get off the screens
Read as many books as you can.
From The York School community to yours, we wish you all the very best this holiday season. Have a safe and relaxing break with family and friends.

Rafiki means Friend in Swahili
As you know, one of the community service trips as part of the Senior School IB curriculum this year is to Kenya. We will be working on water projects while in Kenya (and will take pictures!)
We especially wanted to thank the Junior School children and parents for supporting our Kenya Trip fundraiser for ‘We Walk for Water’ by purchasing Rafiki bracelets made in Kenya by the Maasai tribe. WIth your generosity, we surpassed our goal to raise $2500 which will go towards purchasing a well in a Kenyan village in need.
We hope these bracelets will be a symbol of friendship for your children.

SAVE THE DATE - RECESS! JANUARY 25
Dear York School Community,
Two weeks ago we announced that - through the great work of The Playground Committee - we had chosen IBI as our design partner to help us build the new Junior School Playground.
In that note (shared again here below), I promised to follow up with an invitation asking you to join us for RECESS! where we would share design ideas and seek input.
The date for RECESS! is January 25 at the Junior School from 8:45 - 10:00.
We’re looking to the community for support, so if you have any questions, or would like to participate in the ‘Junior School Playground journey’ to help realize the best space possible for our children, please contact Praveen Muruganandan, Director of Admission and Advancement at 416 926 1325 X 1129 or via e-mail email@example.com .

FROM Nov. 30 - AND THE JUNIOR SCHOOL PLAYGROUND BUILD GOES TO…..!
Dear York School Community,
As adults we know school is about education. Our children need to be prepared for the future. That means the ability to think, apply mathematical skills, read for education and enjoyment. It also means developing the so called ‘soft skills’ of social development. We, as adults focus on the classroom and curriculum as the place where these skills are learned and applied. We only have to ask our children to know that for them, it is the playground.
For our children the playground is all fun and games, except when it is perhaps life or death, (have you had that conversation?). The playground is the board on which our children’s real life crosses with their imagination seamlessly and several times each day. We as adults know outdoor play is a crucial component in developing a healthy body, intellect and attitude. Our children may not know that intellectually but they understand it viscerally.
It is with these thoughts in mind that the Playground Committee went looking for a Design team to create a unique York School Junior playground. Discussion, consultation, and research led to a request for proposal (RFP) that laid out the practicalities of our postage size space with the hopes and dreams of those who play on it.
Of the proposals submitted to our RFP, we shortlisted three and invited them to present their ideas. All presenters had passion, and each proposal had elements we liked, though one stood out. The unanimous decision as our design architect, by secret ballot, is IBI Group.
IBI Group is a global team of architects, engineers, planners, designers, and technology professionals dedicated to creating livable, sustainable, technologically advanced urban environments. World famous, but originating right here at home in Toronto, Canada. IBI will help us build a space where our children can play, imagine, excel, have fun and be themselves.
In terms of next steps, we would like to invite you to join us for RECESS! No better name for a meeting with the Junior Playground Design Team in January. We will share design ideas and seek input. Once the design is finalized, we will move into the preparation stage to have those ‘shovels in the ground’ by end of June to be ready for our children in September 2019.
Thank you to the members of Playground Committee, and the other parent advisors and volunteers, who dedicated their expertise and many hours so far to this process.
Let’s work together to make a playground that is an appropriate stage for our children as they play out their dreams.
