Last weekend, three members of the York School's Debate Programme participated at the International Independent School Public Speaking Championships at Gray Academy for Jewish Education as well as Balmoral Hall in Winnipeg. Each student participated in three events that ranged from Radio Newcast, Extemporaneous Speaking (impromptu topics based on the last six months of news) and Cross-Examination Debate answering the question "Should economic sanctions be placed on countries that break environmental agreements?"

After two and a half days of grueling competition, the York students did quite well. Grade 12 student Caitlin Morgante placed 14th in radio newscast. Grade 10 student Ben Singer made all three of his event finals and placed 2nd overall in Impromptu Debate and Grade 11 student Emma Evans made two event finals, extemporaneous speaking and Cross-Examination debate The team of Singer/Evans placed second in the Cross-Ex finals. In their overall standings, Ben placed 28th and Emma placed 32nd out of 142 competitors from eight countries.

Congratulations, debaters!
