Winter Camping

This year, our Grade 9 students participated in a winter camping excursion as part of the I.C.E. (Integrated Canadian Experience) Programme during March. During this experience, our Grade 9’s learn what it is like to hike, camp, cook, sleep and exist outdoors in the cold months of winter in Algonquin Park. Most come back surprised at the beauty of northern Canada, and find that they tapped into resilience, positivity and a team spirit they didn’t know existed within until tested in these conditions. This trip is curricular in nature, bringing together much of their learning during the year and leading into the culminating activity of a film-making exercise which they present to parents and staff later in the spring.

Please enjoy Sam Flood’s reflections on this experience at:

India Trip
Two groups of our Grade 11 students travel to India in March as part of an IB Service Learning initiative. They volunteer at Global Pathways School (GPS) in the rural southern village of Chettipalayam in the province of Tamil Nadu. Students spend their days in classrooms reading and singing with students to help them with their English, playing games on the playground, and working on tasks around the newly renovated GPS campus to beautify the space. This year, Mr Cooper and the students have also been helping develop a ‘Maker Space’ at GPS and coaching the GPS students on the finer points of bottle rocket launching. One of the most meaningful experiences for the students is visiting the local communities to see the intergenerational impact of Global Pathways School and The York School donations first hand.

The Fulford League - Judges Needed!

Dear parents and members of the York School Community,

The Fulford League is the oldest student debate leagues in Ontario. Comprising of 21 CIS schools, the League meets three times a year in healthy competition. This year, The York School has the honour of hosting the final competition of the League calendar. The Spring Fulford event will be held on the 21st of April in the Middle and Senior School. The prepared motion is: This house should rescind Aung San Suu Kyi’s honorary Canadian citizenship.

In order for the event to run smoothly and to ensure that students from other CIS schools have a great experience, we are in need of debate judges! No experience is required, as there is a briefing on how to judge debate. The briefing will begin at 9 am and the final round will end between 2 and 2:30 pm. If you are free, please fill out this form and join us in what promises to be an exciting day of discourse and discussion!

In addition, we have four students from Ashbury College in Ottawa who have requested billeting for one night (Friday-Saturday). Please contact Grace Nolan directly if you can assist.

Congratulations to debate Co-Head Emma Evans who, because of her results and leadership skills, has been selected to try-out for the Canadian World Schools Debate Team.

Emma was chosen from approximately one hundred applicants from all over Canada and will compete in a 24 person tournament April 22-23 to determine the final students who will represent the team.

This is the first time that a York School student has been selected to participate in the National Team Try Out. Congratulations, Emma!
