Senior School - September 7 / 2018

Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

What an incredible start we have had to the school year in the Senior School this week! I have just returned from Camp Wanakita where the grade 9s are finding new friends, getting to know their teachers and advisors, and working together to create a positive, collaborative culture that is the bedrock of a superior educational experience. Not surprisingly, then, I already found a positive, collaborative culture up at the Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre on Wednesday where the grade 12s were mapping out the year ahead and joining in on high ropes exercises that tested their abilities to work together, persist in the task, and cheer one another on.

Sometimes I feel like I am merely a spectator to a great educational wonder here at The York School!  But I did not stay on the sidelines for long, as students willingly shared summer stories with me and helped me learn 90 new names - all part of building a caring community!

But we also want to hear your stories and get caught up with you. I hope that you will take opportunities like this morning’s Coffee Connect, that you will read the weekly Flash, and that you will reach out to our teachers, advisors, social workers, and our learning strategist, as need be.  On that note I would recommend the following in terms of communication:

Advisor - Your child’s advisor (shows up on their timetable) will have a well-rounded knowledge of your child and is good person to talk to if you have a question about how your child is fitting in or their overall academic progress.

Subject Teacher - If you have a question about the curriculum or your child’s progress in a particular subject, please contact their teacher directly.

Learning Strategist - Ms. Jessica Smart works one-on-one with students to help them develop learning strategies in order to ensure success. If you have a psych-ed assessment for your child or are contemplating one, you should be in touch with Ms. Smart.  She will also reach out to you should our staff note learning patterns across subjects that might be overcome with greater intervention.

Academic Counselling - David Hanna can be reached through the Senior School Administrative Assistant, Vicky Diano

Social-Emotional Counselling - Please be in touch with either of our Social Workers, Elissa Kline-Beber or Jacob Ernst.

Trips - Andrea Lossing, our Trip Coordinator, is the best person to speak to about any trip that is overnight.  With day trips, you are best to contact the teacher involved.

General Inquiries - Vicky Diano knows everything! She can be reached at 1117.

And then there’s me.  If you have a global concern that you don’t think can be properly answered by any of the above, reach out to me. I would love to sit down with you.

I wish all parents a fabulous school year!

David Hamilton
Senior School Principal

Attention All Athletes,

This is going to be a great year. For our school to make the Jump we need our athletes to train as high performance athletes.  Take a look at our athlete institute which begins September 15th with our first ever ‘athlete combine’.  This is an opportunity to work with Strength and Conditioning Coach Reid Hall and go through some athletic testing. On top of this opportunity, we are bringing in NBA Skills Coach David Nurse for four weekends and Canadian Beach Volleyball Olympian Martin Reader.  Please fill out the form and let's be our best selves.

Our annual TYS @ TFC game is being held on Sunday, October 28th at BMO Field. The FC will take on the Atlanta United at 4:30pm. Tickets are $68 each, with a maximum order of 5. We have limited availability so order now by clicking here.
