SK - February 8/ 2019

HIGHLIGHTS

Thank you all for joining us for Parent-Teacher Interviews. We hope that we have answered any questions or concerns that you may have had. As always, please do not hesitate to contact us should anything come up.

It was a fun-filled and exciting week here in Kindergarten. The SKs experienced an amazing traditional Lion Dance performance on Tuesday for the Lunar New Year! Today, we celebrated 100 days of school!

We are diving into our senses unit. We had a special visit from a visually-impaired The York School parent on Thursday. The SKs were a respectful, curious and inquiring audience.  Today, we had a fun, risk-taking activity where we led a blind-folded partner through an obstacle course.

Math

In Math, we are wrapping up our unit on Measurement. In addition to the number sense and numeration concepts that we are exploring, we will be inquiring into patterns and sequences that occur in everyday life.

Art

This week in SK Art class, we are considering how the 5 senses can influence the creation of art. We will be spending time listening to a variety of genres of music this week, noting how different time signatures, meters, beats, rhythms, and instruments change the way we create.

In other news, Ms. Vanessa Emer will be returning from her maternity leave on Tuesday, February, 19. At this time, she will resume her roll teaching Grade 2-Grade 5 Visual Arts. Ms. Andrea Hughes will resume her previous role of teaching JK, SK, and Grade 1 Visual Arts.

French

In French, the students have continued to explore the five senses in French. In particular, the students have been viewing videos that been exploring those five senses. Please follow the link to view an example of one those videos.Les cinq sens

Music

In Music, the SKs continue using the plastic tubes called BoomWhackers to play different melodies. The students watched a video of university students playing the song Africa on BoomWhackers. The SKs also used streamers to listen and move to different styles of music.

LOOKING AHEAD

We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on the morning of February 14th. Students do not have to exchange cards but if they do, we ask that they include everyone in their class, similar to our Birthday Party invitations. See class lists below. Please feel free to contact Ms. Julie or Mr. Pascal if you have any questions or concerns.

GLOBAL PATHWAYS SCHOOL

Each year a group of grade 11's travel to India during March Break to volunteer at Global Pathways School. We have a special connection with the school as the founders of the school are the previous Head of York School and Head of the Junior School. Currently, a past Grade 9 ICE teacher, Jim Brickell, is the Principal of Global Pathways School.

The students travelling to GPS enjoy two weeks of volunteering in the classrooms, taking field trips with the classes, enjoying recess on the play structures that have been donated by The York School community and spend time with students in the classes and their homes.

Before departing on this adventure we collect donations to take with us in duffle bags to hand out to the community. This years' wish list is here. If you have any of the following items stored away in your closets and are looking to find a new home for these items, please bring them to The York School, there are bins in the Gathering Place to deposit the items. We will be collecting these items until Monday, February 25th. Many thanks in advance for your donations.
