Dear Junior School Families,
A very warm welcome back to school. We’ve had a great week of learning together, seeing old friends, making new friends and getting into our classroom and school routines. The energy level in the Junior School was outstanding this past week and, along with the hot weather, made for lots of fun!
We were thrilled to hear how many of our Junior School students completed their homework over the summer - turning off their technology, getting outside to play and reading as many books as possible. We all hope this homework continues throughout the school year.
We have many new faces in our community this year - students, staff and parents and we look forward to everyone feeling a warm, positive community spirit in the coming weeks. We have a number of new teachers joining us at the Junior School as well as a few changes from the summer. We warmly welcome to The York School:

Junior School Pick-Up and Drop-Off routines (Please see information below)
As we foster independence and introduce school routines, we ask of parents the following:
If you walk your child(ren) into the school or pick them up, please do so in the reception area. Grades 1-5 parents should refrain from going upstairs unless there is an exceptional circumstance as all students should proceed to/be in the playground area.
Allow your child(ren) to carry their own backpacks. This fosters independence and responsibility.
Make plans ahead of time for pick-up, drop-off and play dates. Students will not be permitted to use the school phone to make playdates.
We look forward to welcoming all parents to our Junior School Curriculum Night on Thursday September 13 at 7:00 p.m. where we will introduce our staff, share our learning goals for the year and have you meet your child(ren)’s teachers and hear about the learning in the classrooms.
In the meantime, as a reminder to our returning parents and for the benefit of our new parents regarding the leadership of the Junior School, we want you to know that we deeply value the home-school partnership and want to ensure that communication is clear, consistent and collaborative.

Drop-off and Pick-up
Drop-off and pick-up at the Junior School is a very busy time. As a community, we must work together and help each other to ensure the safety of our students. If you need to collect your child before 3:45 p.m., please park on Yonge Street and ask reception to have student paged from their classroom.
JK/SK with older siblings and Grade 1-5 - 8:00 a.m. - 8:15 a.m.
JK-SK without older siblings- 8:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.
Dismissal and pick-up times:
JK-SK - 3:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Grade 1 - Grade 5 - 3:45 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. *Students will not be paged before 3:45 p.m.
There is no parking on site or in the church parking lot. We have only drive-through access to the church parking lot.
We have had an exciting week in SK! We began by attending a full school welcome back assembly on Tuesday afternoon. The children drew pictures and shared details of their summertime adventures. We talked about our daily routines and some of the things we will be learning this year.
Our first Unit of Inquiry is How We Organize Ourselves. We will be looking at how school communities are organized to help us learn and play together. Our first math exploration will be patterning. Over the next week or two we will be individually assessing your children with regard to their current language and math skills. We will keep you informed of weekly activities through the Flash.
In French, this week, the students reviewed the rules in class, in particular, the pas d’anglais s’il te plait (no English please) rule whenever the ligne magique (the magic lign) is put at the door frame. When the ligne magique is at the door frame, the class becomes similar to a French immersion class. The students did a great job being risk-takers this week.
Our first term PSE (Personal and Social Education) unit is Building a Caring Community. The students will be using the language expected and unexpected behaviours. When an expected behaviour happens other people may feel calm, happy, grateful, neutral. When an unexpected behaviour happens other people may feel frustrated, shocked, silly, sad, scared. We will be using the picture book series, “How Do Dinosaurs…” to build social awareness around behaviours in a playful and engaging way. At home, you may wish to use these books, or other stories, in the same way. If your child is going to be absent, please email both your child’s teacher, and the attendance email. The email addresses are: for Julie, firstname.lastname@example.org and for Pascal email@example.com. The main attendance is firstname.lastname@example.org.
We have a wonderful Associate Teacher in SK this year named Sara Akbari. Her time will be split equally each day between both SK classes.
If you have not done so already, please send extra clothes, socks and underwear in a clear Ziploc bag (please label) to be kept in your child’s cubby, as well as a water bottle. Water bottles will be kept at school for the week and sent home Friday. We also need indoor shoes - gym shoes for summer uniform, black shoes for the winter uniform. Although there is a snack provided on the meal plan, we strongly recommend sending extra snacks. There is snack time twice a day.

Our annual TYS @ TFC game is being held on Sunday, October 28th at BMO Field. The FC will take on the Atlanta United at 4:30pm. Tickets are $68 each, with a maximum order of 5. We have limited availability so order now by clicking here.

The service dates for Top Marks are designed to provide an opportunity for parents to have their child sized by a Top Marks Representative. There will be sample sizes for students to try on. Families can also return items and submit an order for a replacement item that will be mailed directly to their home. There is no additional charge for shipping an exchanged item.
