SK - November 16 / 2018

We had an exciting week in dramatic play as we switched up our play corners! SKA has a puppet show now, and SKB are cooking up a storm in their new kitchen!

The children are learning strategies such as counting on and doubles plus one and minus one in addition. We are also learning how addition and subtraction are related, as well as tricks for learning 10 facts.

We continued writing stories about our class pet Fluffy’s adventures and learned the first five lower case letters. As we learn these, we will be encouraging the children to write mostly in lower case and we will be reminding them of the rules for capitals. In reading we are learning about bossy or magic ‘e’ and how it makes a vowel say its’ name (e.g. bake, cake,). Another useful rule is, when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking (e.g. beach, reach, beard)

Next week, we will begin our home reading program. We will send a few books home in a zip lock for your child to practice reading. Please feel free to keep them as long as you wish and return them when you need new ones. Some strategies to help you are: cover up part of a word to make it into more manageable bits to sound out, and looking at the pictures for clues as to what the word could be.

Unit of Inquiry

In inquiry, we brainstormed what the meaning of global citizen is. The children we engaged in a discussion about how we use resources around the world

In Music, the SKs started to learn the first verse to “A Million Dreams”. This song will be sung by the entire school at our Holiday Concert in December. The SKs also started a song about snowmen and practiced rhythmic patterns with the bells.

In French, the students have been practising the play, La poule Maboule, once again.
