Welcome to SK! We have had a great few days getting to know your children. We enjoyed hearing about their summer activities, and seeing them draw pictures of their adventures. We enjoyed attending the whole school assembly on Wednesday afternoon where the students new to The York School were introduced. We had our first learning buddies classes, and enjoyed getting to know each other through play.
Please ensure that your child has extra clothing in their cubbies at school, including socks and underwear. We also ask that you have a pair of shoes strictly for indoor wear (running shoes with summer uniform, black shoes with winter), as well as whatever outdoor footwear they come to school in (rubber boots, winter boots, running shoes, etc.).
Please note on your child’s timetable when they will be having PHE. On those days, the children come to school wearing their PHE uniform. Also, please return library books on the days the children have Library scheduled.
Kindergarten Drop Off Policy
To foster your child’s independence, the Discovery Zone is closed to parents and caregivers. Children will be dropped off in the back playground with their backpacks or in the Gathering Space if the weather is inclement. At every occasion, we want to encourage student independence and responsibility. If arriving late, (after 9:00 a.m.), Mr. Pascal will meet students outside of the Discovery Zone. If you need to speak with your child’s teacher, please make an appointment, email or call.
Kindergarten Pick Up Policy
At 3:30 p.m., students can be picked up from the playground or outside of the Discovery Zone. If your child needs to be picked up early, please let the teacher know ahead of time. We will ensure that your child is ready and waiting in the Gathering Place, supervised by reception. If you need to speak with your child’s teacher, please make an appointment, email or call.
At The York School, we constantly reflect on and review our practices, ensuring that the values of The York School are present in each classroom and assigned homework. As a faculty, we reviewed current research and understanding of development and learning, and reflected on our homework policy. We are happy to share the new Junior School Homework Policy. The policy is an articulation of current and best practices. It is considerate of young learners’ development and the importance of balancing school and family.
In alignment with the new policy, students in Grades 4 and 5 will continue to use IXL as one possible resource, while students in JK to Grade 3 will not.
If you have any questions, please contact the Junior School Director of Curriculum, Karen McCallum-Ryan, email@example.com.
Please review the Junior School Policy as there have been some significant changes, especially around birthday treats. We encourage you to pose any questions on Curriculum Night.
Although the children are all on the meal plan, which includes two light snacks, we do recommend sending extra snacks.
