SK - October 13 / 2017

The children loved seeing The Kenyan Boys Choir perform on Tuesday!

Thank you to our parent volunteers who joined us Thursday for our trip to Downey’s Farm. We had a great time learning about pumpkins, feeding the animals, going on a wagon ride and playing with all the amazing activities in the field.

We wrapped up our first inquiry unit with the children acting out the role of a school community member.

The children have been learning a new group of sight words. We will add them to our wall of words we are trying to learn how to read and write. We have also been exploring how we can represent numbers in different ways, one-to-one correspondence, and making tallies together as a whole-group.

French: The students have been reviewing the colours in French this week.

Art: The SKs are learning all about complementary colours. This week, students identified pairs of colours which are complementary and created three small paintings using their new knowledge.

Music: SK students are exploring the difference between beat and rhythm by patting the beat, and clapping the way the words go. This has been expanded to creating our first bands and by assigning different instruments to each concept; played simultaneously.

We will be starting our Borrow-a-Book programme at the end of the month. Children will be bringing home a book to read. They may keep it as long as they like, we will send a new one when we see the book come back.

Individual and Class photo day is Thursday October 19. Although SKB has gym that day please have your child come to school in proper winter uniform for the photos.

Mathematics Apps
There are so many play-based apps that help children develop not only their math skills but as their conceptual understanding of mathematics that are age-appropriate. Below is a list of some highly recommended apps from respected mathematics educator and researcher, Jo Boaler (@joboaler,

Brainquake Inc

Dragon Box

Tap Tap Blocks

Motion Math

Sushi Monster

Bedtime Math

Thank you to those parents who have followed the Drop Off and Pick Up policy and refrained from stepping in to the Discovery Zone during these times. We appreciate the support in our quest for independence for your children. We kindly ask that all parents follow this policy, as it can create a discrepancy and it feels unfair for the children, as they see it as some parents are allowed in and others are not. Thank you in advance for your support.

Please make sure to check The York School’s full school calendar regularly for updates, locations and times.
