SK - Sept. 12 / 2019

Welcome to SK! We have had a great start to the new school year and can’t wait to get to know your children even better.

Unit of Inquiry

We have begun our first Inquiry Unit How We Organize Ourselves. Our Central Idea is that roles and responsibilities are influenced by their surroundings. The SKs began brainstorming what they think the various people at The York School do on a day to day basis.

We also started our Inquiry Unit that will run all year. This Unit focuses on how the IB Learner Profile attributes create global citizens. We read the story “Be Kind” and talked about acts of kindness and caring. They drew pictures of themselves being caring. We also talked about all the feelings associated with the first day of school and how being a good listener demonstrates caring.

The children have been listening to stories and reflecting on the information conveyed in the text. They have been making predictions and sharing their favourite parts.

We have been reviewing the long and short vowel sounds and have begun our handwriting program by reviewing the correct formation of F, E, D and P and coming up with words that contain those letters.

Data Management will be our first area of investigation in math. Throughout the unit we will be learning to collect, organize, display and interpret data to solve problems and communicate information.

Welcome to Physical Education class!  It was such a pleasure to meet the new wonderful students and all the returning students. In our classes,  we have been learning the rules and routines of the gym such as how to safely travel around the gym. We are also beginning to learn about space and body awareness.

In Music, the SK students reviewed two note call and response songs (using the pitches so and mi) as a warm up. The students have started to look at and show me the scale with hand signs by watching the motion of the sound as I point to it. They are learning the song, Five Little Pumpkins.

This week, the students started French class for the first time. They were reintroduced to the ligne magique (the magic lign). When the ligne magique is put on at the beginning of every class, the students are expected to only speak French except for the three allotted English words every class. At the end of class, the lign is removed. It is part of the daily routine in French.  If the students succeed in only speaking in French, they receive a ticket. Every two Fridays, there is a draw with the sac a surprises (the prize bag) where two children receive a prize for only speaking French. The students were true risk-takers in French class!

Art Studio

In Art Studio, students have been sketching in their sketchbooks. These sketchbooks will remain at school until June, at which point they will come home to be shared with you. We have been exploring with watercolours this week; how do we paint? How do we take care of our tools? What happens when we mix two colours? How can I challenge myself to try something new? Over the next couple of weeks, the SK students will join Ms. Melissa to form the letters of the alphabet with clay. These will be fired in the kiln, glazed, and then used as a co-created word-wall in our two SK classrooms. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me (Melissa Hickey) at
