Message from David Hamilton, Senior School Principal

As you sit silently reading these words, Grade 10 student Ryan Cho is sitting on a plane, rehearsing words that he will give voice to 13,000 kilometers away, in Cape Town, South Africa. For Ryan, accompanied by his venerable coach, Grace Nolan, is heading to the World Individual Debate and Public Speaking Championships, an honour he qualified for in February. It is fitting that the World Championships be held in South Africa, where Nelson Mandela raised his voice to bring about an end to apartheid.

While we don’t expect Ryan’s words to have quite that impact, we are very proud of what Ryan, and so many other York School students have accomplished by raising their voice in the context of public speaking and debating events. This year has been a banner year for The York School debating team and its three coaches, Ms. Nolan, Mr. Burkett and Ms. Barber, with both Middle School and Senior School students placing well in almost every event we have entered.

And now it is our turn to host some of the best of Ontario’s debaters in the final Fulford League debating competition here at The York School on April 21st.  I strongly recommend that you take this opportunity to attend the debating tournament and act as a judge. As Mandela once said,

A good leader can engage in a debate frankly and thoroughly, knowing that at the end he and the other must be closer, and thus emerge stronger.
— Nelson Mandela
