Dear Parents,

We are a hive of activity. In the gym, the girls varsity basketball team is preparing for their battle for Farnham against De LaSalle (Oct. 12 at 6:30). From the drama room, you’ll hear Alex cackle: “and I’ll get your Toto too!” as they practise for the all school performance of The Wizard of Oz.

University representatives come to make presentations in our library. Our outdoor education partner, Wanakita, overflows with York Middle School students engaged in community building. Our Grade 9s, off to collect experience like pollen, venture to Toronto Island with the ICE program to learn about the history of place. They come back ecstatic with independence. Our school spirit is everywhere.

The parents in our community are busy too! I see this in the Junior School Library and at YIP gatherings. Where I witnessed our enthusiasm for our school first hand was at the Terry Fox Run earlier this week (where we surpassed our goal of raising $ 4000 to bring in $ 6202.15!!). You came out in droves to support your children and join the celebration for a cause. As the Director of Citizenship - where our mission is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who are engaged citizens of the world - I am constantly encouraged by your active participation in being part of the community. Kindness is a learned muscle memory, and your positive energy means a lot to our students/your children and it means a lot to us.

So let's keep building that Gladiator spirit, where our school is a fun inclusive place to learn. As we savour our bounty heading into Thanksgiving soon, let’s be thankful for this hive called The York School in the heart of the city. Let’s appreciate the friends from around the world we have made here in this great town. And let’s remind our kids that they are great.

Director of Citizenship

As part of our Digital Wellness Week, parents of students K-12 are invited to join Justin Medved, Director of Learning Innovation and Technology and Elissa Kline-Beber, Director of Wellness to an evening session on fostering digital citizenship and wellness. They will discuss how The York School is taking a whole school approach to developing healthy digital habits and skills in our students, as they navigate an increasingly interconnected world. The session will address issues such as limiting digital distraction, managing gaming, promoting healthy sleep habits, and - as parents - setting an example for our children. As well, student leaders will be in attendance to share the adolescent voice on some of these timely issues as well as how they are helping to steward the conversation at school as part of the student-led Digital Citizenship initiative.

Considering that it takes 2,700 litres of water to make one cotton shirt (enough water for a person to drink for 2 1/2 years), the YPA collects gently used uniforms for their annual spring Second Hand Uniform Sale.

For the next two weeks (as we change over from summer to winter uniforms), there will be boxes at both campuses in which you can donate any (outgrown) summer uniforms. The next uniform collection will be in December. All funds raised help to fund YPA initiatives for the school community.
