Message from Junior School Principal, Jennifer Wyatt
Dear York School Community,
It’s hard to believe that we have come to the end of week two and routines have been re-established, almost as if those summer months never occurred… thank goodness for our memories, journals, photos, and videos!
“A sense of calm comes from a pause. It can be a simple moment to take a breath or an opportunity to reflect, reassess and re-imagine. A pause is equal parts necessary and important.”
With wellness being at the heart of The York School, this statement resonates loudly, particularly the part about re-imagining. How do we, as a community, re-imagine during our pauses?
Oftentimes, we pause when we have to, rather than when we want to. We pause when we feel the most overwhelmed and tired. But when we practice pausing regularly, as we encourage everyone to do at The York School, we can move beyond mere need and move towards reflection, reassessment, and re-imagination.
When we pause daily for a mindful moment; weekly to journal our thoughts; or monthly to re-read our notes, review our gratitude lists or examine our doodles, we then fully begin to appreciate the moments we share and live.
Imagine re-imagining! This process of continuous pausing opens the doors to creativity. It allows us to ask ourselves different questions, to think of what else we could have done, how else we could have interpreted a situation, what other lenses we may have looked through at various moments in our days. Re-imagining is what IB learners and educators do – it’s what we want York School students to do: re-imagine the world.
I challenge you to take the time each day to think of one moment that made you smile – big or small. Then, I challenge you to pause and go deeper – to see, think, and feel differently.
Pause this weekend.
Jennifer Wyatt, Junior School Principal
