Dear York School Community,

The 2019-20 school year is off to a great start. Hearing the sounds of students learning, collaborating, asking questions and having fun make a school come alive again after a busy summer.

Our school-wide theme for this year is teaching and learning and, quite fittingly, it is an important focus as we work toward completing our strategic plan (20/20) by June 2020.  We know that investing in more professional development for our teachers and staff, to ensure they have the latest data, research and pedagogical practices available to them, will continue to provide our students with a unique and innovative learning experience.

An important step in this process is re-thinking how we structure our day. By looking more closely at our timetable, we can further identify areas of strength as well as areas that need improvement. To do this, The York School has engaged Michael Rettig, from School Schedule Associates, to visit our school to work with teachers, administrators, students and parents on a vision for a new timetable. By the end of our work, we hope to have some new ideas for a timetable that maximizes student learning, continues to offer opportunities for student extracurriculars and most importantly, balances student wellness.

There is a great deal of research surrounding not only the ideal structure for a school day but also how the structure itself may need to change as children grow and develop to best support their learning.

We have begun our work with Michael Rettig by identifying several dates this year where we will start school late at our middle/senior school and have early dismissal at our junior school. This not only creates balance in the lives of our students based on their age and stage but also gives our staff a dedicated time for professional development and meetings. A chart of JS Early Dismissal & MS/SS Late Start dates for this school year can be found here. After care programs will still be available for students who require that option at our JS, and students at the MS and SS who need to be dropped off at regular times will also be accommodated. We look forward to sharing our learning journey with the York community.

As we embark on this new academic year together, I am reminded of the importance of collaboration between school and home. It begins with our teachers and staff who know our students really well and are able to inspire, nurture and push them to reach their academic, social, emotional and physical potential. They are an outstanding group of educators and people, and I am honoured to work alongside them. The same is true of our parent body, which is a super engaged, committed and vibrant community of diverse and inclusive families.

School can have its ups and downs, just like life does. Please remember to view challenges that your child(ren) will experience in the best possible light, and support them as they learn through failure and develop resiliency. You can do this by encouraging them to speak with their teachers and problem solve their way to a solution. Reach out to your child(ren)โ€™s teacher in partnership, and collaborate on a positive way forward.

Thank you in advance for your support of our students, our staff and The York School community! Together we will have an amazing year.
