Building Emotional Regulation Skills in Your Child
Presented by Dr. Zia Lakdawalla
Parents play a critical role in a child's ability to regulate emotions. Grounded in evidence-based theory and skills, this talk provided parents with a framework for better understanding their child's emotions and how to better support them. We reviewed common challenges parents face in managing their child's big emotions, and the tips and strategies that are most effective for building emotion regulation skills and resilience.
York purchases 17 Farnham Ave.
The York School has purchased the house at 17 Farnham Ave., which is immediately adjacent to our Middle/Senior School campus, to the west. The purchase is part of our Strategy Plan priority of "building a strategic campus plan with world class facilities and opportunities for expansion". We look forward to sharing more information about how we might use the property both short and long term in the coming months.
UPCOMING EVENTS
ATHLETICS
Any great athletic culture thrives on daily celebrations. This week we got the opportunity to celebrate our Fall CISAA champions and our “Athletes of the Month”.
Our program is all about participation and being inclusive. That being said, it is also important to celebrate the “excellence” within TYS. We’ve won 4 CISAA championships and had 3 OFSAA appearances this fall alone. Any time you walk into the 1320 gym, take a look at our track and you will see the legacies of our previous athletes. If you ask yourself “How did we get here?” The answer is simple… CULTURE. I wanted to share this video featuring Danny Hurley, the University of Connecticut Head Coach, who took over a program that lacked identity. This one is a good one: The Culture that Cultivates Greatness
Good luck to our Varsity Girls Basketball team as they compete in Halifax and our Varsity Boys Volleyball team as they are off to Chatham to compete at OFSAA.
Go TYS!

NEW CIRCLES ANNUAL WINTER CLOTHING DRIVE
York’s annual clothing drive for New Circles will begin on Monday, December 2 and runs until Friday, December 13th. New Circles is a “not-for-profit, grass-roots agency that builds strong and caring communities by providing clothing and skills training programs to equity-deserving individuals.” Our long standing partnership with New Circles continues with your generous donations. The founder of New Circles, Cindy Blakely, is grandmother to York School students Robbie K. and his brothers Ridley and Charlie.
As a social worker, she understood that clothing is a basic human need and recognized the need for a place where people could access clean, seasonally-appropriate, free clothing.
At this time, New Circles is only accepting the following gently-used items:
Winter jackets, Winter Boots, Men’s Clothing, Shoes (for everyone), Boys’ Clothes, Winter Accessories
If you are open to purchasing new items, there is also a need for the following in all sizes:
Underwear, Socks, Diapers
Students can bring in items and place them in the house bins outside the Student Life & Belonging office in the Senior School cafeteria, Middle School Commons or Junior School Reception area.
