Giving Tuesday is on December 3. On this global day of giving, we’re asking you to support York’s financial assistance program. Our goal is to have 100 new donors come together before 2025 to grow this important program. Please help open the door to an exceptional York education for hard-working and deserving students by making your Giving Tuesday gift today.

DEBATE & speech update

At the provincial speech tournament this week, Elizabeth K. (Grade 11) — who has been working very hard at speech for four years — qualified for Nationals at SJR in Winnipeg. She placed fourth in interpretive reading, sixth in debate and sixth overall.

Brandon G. and Charlie M. (both in Grade 12) are also competing in the National British Parliamentary Championships this weekend at CDS.

BUSINESS CLUB (DECA) UPDATE

On Saturday, November 23, a contingent of York School students competed in the Ontario Regional DECA competition at North Park Secondary School in Brampton. Students were given business case studies for which they needed to prepare and deliver a 10-minute presentation to a judge. Numerous students scored exceptionally high on their presentations. Combined with a written test which was completed at the beginning of November, eleven Senior School students were successful in qualifying for the provincial competition in early February. In the meantime, the remainder of the business club will turn their attention to the Future Business Leaders of Canada (FBLC) case competition on March 1 and 2. Congratulations to everyone who took a risk and stood before a judge to present their pitches.

ATHLETICS

Our Winter Season is in full effect. We are very proud of our Varsity Girls Basketball team that repped our TYS with pride at CAIS Girls Basketball in Halifax and our Varsity Boys Volleyball team who made the consolation quarter finals at OFSAA in our school’s inaugural appearance.

This week our Varsity Boys Basketball team is off to Ridley College for the CAIS National Tournament while our Varsity Girls Volleyball and Curling teams open their season versus Havergal.

NEW CIRCLES ANNUAL WINTER CLOTHING DRIVE

York’s annual clothing drive for New Circles will begin on Monday, December 2 and runs until Friday, December 13. New Circles is a “not-for-profit, grass-roots agency that builds strong and caring communities by providing clothing and skills training programs to equity-deserving individuals.” Our long standing partnership with New Circles continues with your generous donations. The founder of New Circles, Cindy Blakely, is grandmother to York School students Robbie K. and his brothers Ridley and Charlie.

As a social worker, she understood that clothing is a basic human need and recognized the need for a place where people could access clean, seasonally-appropriate, free clothing.

At this time, New Circles is only accepting the following gently-used items:
Winter jackets, Winter Boots, Men’s Clothing, Shoes (for everyone), Boys’ Clothes, Winter Accessories

If you are open to purchasing new items, there is also a need for the following in all sizes:
Underwear, Socks, Diapers

Students can bring in items and place them in the house bins outside the Student Life & Belonging office in the Senior School cafeteria, Middle School Commons or Junior School Reception area.

Questions? Please contact Sarah Charley, Director, Junior Student Life & Belonging at scharley@yorkschool.com or Erin Porter, Director, Senior Student Life & Belonging eporter@yorkschool.com.
