Middle School Principal Update

At this week’s Middle and Senior School Assembly, our Middle School Principal, Ms. Helen Gin, shared that in June 2025 she will be retiring from a 33-year career in education, which has included 23 extraordinary years at The York School. We are deeply grateful for Helen’s visionary leadership and the role she has played in creating our Middle School.

Ms. Gin starts the school year off right in September 2009.

Helen began her career as a Science and Math teacher with the Toronto District School Board and taught at IB Schools in Belgium and Japan before coming to York. Her first position here was teaching Biology, Science, and Theory of Knowledge in the Diploma Program. She also held the position of Vice Principal and Middle Years Program and Diploma Coordinator before she was asked to create our Middle School division and became its Principal.

With a keen understanding of students’ and teachers’ needs – and guidance from a task force of educators, parents and students – Helen created a Middle School that features supportive homerooms, as well as coaching and mentoring programs that empower faculty members.

As she begins her final year, Helen is reflecting on her time at York. She says working with faculty and staff who are collaborative, caring, and innovative to meet the needs of all students. Over the years, I have learned a lot from the students, start with positive intentions, exercise kindness and generosity and hold true to your integrity to get the best version from students.

This year there will be opportunities for students, alumni, staff and parents to celebrate Helen’s incredible contributions to York and thank her for her leadership. We will share these with you in the coming months.

ATHLETICS

TYS Athletics is in full swing! 22 teams and 5 developmental programs are going on this Fall!

2023 - 2024 was arguably the most successful year in our school’s history. What did we learn? We learned that this wonderful school has a standard. That standard is based on a togetherness and competitive spirit like no other. So what is 2024-2025 all about? It’s about strengthening our standard. I have already spoken to multiple teams about creating their team culture and identity.

Culture will always be a pillar that makes TYS strong.

The learning that sport provides should never be underestimated. It’s learning that is powerful, builds habits and character that stay with us forever, and fosters a deep appreciation for physical activity and well-being!
