STUDENT LIFE & BELONGING

WITH GRATITUDE

We wanted to say thank you to the YPA and parent volunteers for their ongoing support of the student experience in the Junior School. We appreciate the many parents who joined us on our Great Canadian Outdoor Day at the rink or on the trails up north to support our students skating, snowshoeing or cross country skiing. We are thrilled with the two new partnerships we have made with Leaside Memorial Arena and Hardwood Hills Ski & Bike to host this event. It was wonderful to come together as a community and the student feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Enjoy the fantastic photos of our time together with these links: Skiing & Snowshoeing | Skating.

We would also like to thank the YPA and parent volunteers who have assisted and supported us over the past month by leading outdoor games at our Winter Recess Event, decorating our hallways for Lunar New Year & Valentine’s Day, visiting homerooms to lead Lunar New Year crafts and tradition talks and by serving hot chocolate during our annual Wellness Week.

We are looking forward to tomorrow’s Friendship Fun Fest and are grateful to our YPA Co-chairs Sam, Karelyn and Jonathan for their coordination of this wonderful community event and to the many parent volunteers who will be leading the exciting activities planned to celebrate this day of love and friendship.

FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH

The 2025 theme for Black History Month is: “Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations.” This year’s theme highlights the many contributions Black communities have made to Canadian society, while also focusing on building a brighter future for future generations.

  • Our Grade 5 leaders are researching the contributions of famous Black Canadians and will be sharing their findings in a bulletin board display and on our news radio broadcast.

We are also welcoming guest author Yolanda T. Marshall at our next R.A.L.Y. (Respectfully Acknowledging and Learning at York) assembly on Tuesday, February 18 to share her book My Soca Birthday Party: with Jollof Rice and Steel Pans. We are ready to dance, sing and read along!

ANNUAL JUNIOR SCHOOL SHOWCASE

The excitement in the hallway was palpable this week as students signed up to perform and share their talents at this year’s JS Showcase.

Sign-ups will remain open until next Wed. Feb. 12th.

  • Students must sign-up in order to be included in the performance.

  • Beginning on Tuesday, February 18th, during recess times, teachers will be checking in with all performers who have signed up.

We are encouraging students to perform live. However, a pre-recorded video may be submitted if the special talent cannot  be performed in the gym. (ie. horseback riding, aerial silks or a pet trick) These students will still need to sign up and do a teacher check in. They will need to submit their 30 sec-1 min talent video filmed in landscape by Thursday, Feb. 27th.
