STUDENT LIFE & BELONGING

I SEE . . . IB RECESS  INITIATIVE - LIVING THE LEARNER PROFILE

Today we launched a new recess initiative using the Learner Profile. We are striving to highlight and celebrate positive behaviour on the playground. During outdoor play, all recess supervisors will identify students who are exhibiting any of the ten learner profile attributes. They will give out I See ... IB cards and explain to each student the learner profile attribute linked to the specific behaviour observed.

Example: I see you being a risk-taker when you ask friends that you don’t usually play with if you can join their game.

This initiative is a house challenge. Students will add their I See.. IB Cards to their house collection box on their way in from recess. We will keep tallying and counting up the cards to see what house is in the lead and ‘living’ the learner profile.

2ND HOUSE MEETING AND HOUSE COLOUR CASUAL DAY - Thursday, November 23

Students are asked to leave their uniforms at home next Thursday and show their house spirit! Put together an outfit with house coloured clothing and accessories. Air -yellow, Water- blue, Fire- red, Earth- green

FOREST OF READING

The Junior School Library is excited to announce that it has launched the 2024 Forest of Reading program! The Forest of Reading is a Canada-wide program that encourages children, teenagers, and adults to read the best of Canadian literature and vote for their favourite titles. You can find more information about the Forest here and on our York School Forest of Reading guide

The Junior School will be reading through the Blue Spruce (Kindergarten to Gr. 2), Silver Birch Express (Gr. 3-4), and Silver Birch (Gr. 5-6) “trees”. Students are encouraged to read at least 5 titles from their respective trees to be eligible to vote and to track their reading progress by checking in with the teachers who support the program as book ambassadors. This year, Gr. 5 students who have read the minimum 5 books and voted will also have the opportunity to attend the Forest of Reading Festival down at the Harbourfront Centre in May!

Please note that while the various book lists have been carefully curated to suit the age and grade level by publishers and librarians, some titles deal with more mature themes. If you have any questions concerning the content, please feel free to contact Gemma Larcina.
