Student Photo I.D. Cards for Cafeteria and York Shop Purchases

  • To streamline the check out process, photo ID cards will be used to make cafeteria or York Shop purchases.

  • This practice is effective on Monday October 30, 2023. 

  • Students will no longer be required to provide their account number. 

  • Cafeteria purchases are permissible in the morning after athletics training or early drop off, at lunch or afterschool. Cafeteria purchases are not permitted for middle school students during classes/in between classes (during snack time).

  • The York Shop is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11:30am - 12:30am for in person purchases up until December 15.

  • Have conversations with your child about their purchases i.e. limits, purchasing for others etc.

 Safeguarding the student photo ID card

  • Students will be guided to safeguard the photo ID card by either a) putting it in their locker before and after lunch b) putting it in their knapsack or c) putting it in their pocket. It is important that students create a habit that is easy and works for them.

Misplaced/forgotten photo ID card

  • If students misplace or have forgotten their photo ID card, they will be required to get a cafeteria slip from Ms. Warren and present this to the cafeteria staff for purchases.

Lost photo ID card

  • A 5$ replacement will be charged to re-issue you a new photo ID card.

  • Students will be required to notify Ms. Warren of this loss.

Upcoming Lockdown Drill and Fire Drill - October 27 and 30

  • As part of the school’s safety plan, the students will be practicing a lockdown drill on Friday, October 27 at 1:40pm.

  • A practice fire drill will be on  Monday, October 30 at 1:40pm.

  •  If your child might experience upset about these drills, please reach out to your child’s homeroom teacher for support.

Halloween Dress up - October 31 

  • Students are welcome to come to school dressed up in silly and fun Halloween costumes

  • Given the climate in the Middle East, we are discouraging students to dress up in scary costumes that relate to death.  

  • Door decorations and pumpkin carving contest will be focused on fun, silly, creative, and not the traditional scary

Student Sleep In - November 1

  • Middle School Homeroom will start at 9:30am.

  •  Students are permitted into the building starting at 9:15am via the laneway or the front door of 1320 Yonge Street. 

  • Students should make their way into homeroom classes. Students who arrive early are permitted to read /work in the library commons.

Middle School Movie Afternoon - November 8 from 4:00pm - 6:00pm

Grade 8 Old York Historical Walk and Mackenzie House Trip  - November 9

  • 8th grade students will be heading to Mackenzie House in downtown Toronto to explore the historical significance of the 1837 Rebellions, the power of the printing press, architecture, city planning, and cultural practices of the time.

  •  During a historical walk of York (old downtown Toronto), students will learn about the successes and challenges that BIPOC faced during this time period, as well as prominent figures who advocated for change in their communities.

November Progress Reports, Virtual Student Centered Interviews and Pick-A-Time 

  • The November Progress Reports will be posted on YorkNet during the week of November 6. An email will be sent to parents notifying you when the reports have been released

  • Student Centred Interviews are scheduled for November 23rd from 1:00pm - 8:30pm and November 24 from 8:30am - 4:00pm.

  • Students will be dismissed from school at 11:40am on November 23 in order to get home for interviews. There will be no classes on the afternoon of November 23 or all day on November 24. 

  • Pick-A-Time will be open for parents to book appointments on Thursday, November 9 at 1:00pm.

Fall Mid-Term Break

  • No classes on Friday, November 10 and Monday, November 13

Community Outreach Opportunities

Face Paint Fundraiser for Princess Margaret Cancer Research 

From October 23 - 31 between 8:20am - 8:55am and at lunch, student leader: Charlotte Y will be in the cafeteria running her third annual fundraiser. Cost is $2.5 - $5 per student.

York Scares Hunger Continues - until October 31

Please remind your students to bring in non perishable food donations and place them in their house boxes outside the Student Life office and Middle School commons. As this is a spirit house and community service challenge to support the Daily Bread Food Bank, all contributions are appreciated.

Halloweek Begins - October 23 - 31

York’s Middle and Senior school student leaders and teachers have been busy planning many festivities for our community this month! Please see below for key dates and information:

Middle & Senior School Ongoing House Challenges

  • Halloween Hunt - students and staff will find Halloween and Fall images scattered around the school. When they are found, they are to return them to their house box outside the Student Life & Belonging Office for points! The house that finds the most will win!

  • Halloween and Scary Movie Poster Competition - students guess the title of the movie posters outside the Student Life and Belonging office. Correct answers win, more house points!

Middle School Only Activities

  • Homeroom Door Decorating - October 23 - 30

  • Halloween Carnival in the GLAD Centre at Lunch - October 27

  • Pumpkin Carving at lunch in room 428 - October 30 and 31

Middle & Senior School Halloween Assembly and Additional Programming - October 31

  • Halloween Costume Catwalk Assembly at 9:05am - 9:50am

    • Students and Faculty are encouraged to dress up and compete at the assembly. Categories this year include: Most Creative Costume, Best DIY Costume, Funniest Costume and Best Team Costume

  • Additional Programming for students who are not attending the assembly will be provided in rooms 325 and 327

*Please ask your students to be especially mindful of their costumes for school this year. In the same way that we have educated our students about not misappropriating cultures in costumes, we would also request that costumes not have overly gory elements or violent imagery.

House Standings Update

Our Middle and Senior School students learned today all of their spirited engagement in our house program has garnered these current standings! Students also learned that house points are given out according to the 3 C’s - Curiosity, Community and Challenge. It’s been a great start for our 4 houses this year and we’re looking forward to more opportunities to participate in the House Program in November!
