STUDENT LIFE & BELONGING

Senior School Student Council ‘23-24

Thank you to all of the students in grades 9 and 10 who ran in our recent election. The number of applicants speaks to how highly committed these grades are to contributing to The York School’s positive culture and sense of community! We hope you will join us in congratulating the following candidates who have earned a place on this year’s student council as representatives for the Grade 9s and 10s, respectively: 9 - Riley C, Daisy M, Daia T, and Hatem A and in 10 - Max S, Simine M, Lyla W, and Becket Y.

Call For Puzzles!

York families, Ms Porter has challenged our students to complete a 1000-piece puzzle a month. Our students, in true York fashion, have taken up this challenge and are finishing puzzles in 2-3 days! To this end, if you have a puzzle at home gathering dust, please send it in. Puzzles can be dropped at the Student Life & Belonging office (room 201).

House Spirit Week - October 16 to 20

We are looking forward to a week of themed dress downs, lunch time activities and a House “Choose Your Challenge” morning (Wednesday October 18), all planned by our spirited Student Council!

Ways that students can earn house points, which will go toward a casual day for the house that wins spirit week and ultimately, the end of year House Cup, is to dress according to the theme and sign up to participate in the activities. Please remind your student to check their email if they are interested in signing up to participate and represent their house!

Remembrance Day Assembly
Call for Presenters and Items for Video Piece

On Wednesday, November 8th the Senior and Middle Schools will gather for our Remembrance Day assembly. This year, we will recognize Indigenous Veterans Day (Nov 8th) and focus on sharing our community’s connections to service during the World Wars as well as global conflicts. The hope is that we can recognize the historical nature of Remembrance Day while honouring members of York families who were directly involved with and impacted by war. Bringing this history home reminds us of the privilege of living in a free country and being a part of a safe and inclusive school community.

To this end, if your family has a service story, an artefact, photographs or a personal connection that you would be willing to share at our assembly, either as a live presenter or as part of a film piece, please contact Erin Porter - Director, Student Life & Belonging at eporter@yorkschool.com.

Peer tutoring

Hi York!

If you are a student in grade 10-12 looking to earn CAS or service hours, develop leadership skills or add impressive extracurriculars to your CV, this is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for…Peer Tutoring is starting again!

Peer tutors will be offering support in a variety of ways: individual and small group, subject specific or supporting student organization. Peer tutoring sessions can be in person or virtual. Tutors and their students (tutees) will be meeting about once a week for a 30-45 minute session at a mutually agreed upon time. This could take place before or after school in person or into the evening if you decide to meet virtually.

If you would like to sign up to be a tutor, please fill out the Peer Tutoring 2023-24 Form. The sessions can be subject-specific, or to help with organization, planning, and more.
Please email peertutoring@yorkschool.com if you have any questions about the Peer Tutoring program.
