YPA Parent Connects
The York School Parents’ Association (YPA) plays a large part in contributing to this vibrant community. The YPA is a volunteer organization that conducts events that increase school spirit and camaraderie. The YPA also encourages volunteerism and raises funds to support the school. All parents and guardians of current students are automatically members of the YPA.
Some of the events organized by the YPA include:
Pre-Loved Uniform Sale
Student Events
Teacher and Staff appreciation events
A speaker series in partnership with the school
Pancake Breakfasts
Social gatherings and so much more
There are many opportunities to volunteer throughout the year, so please consider getting involved! From being a Class Parent to helping at the YPA Halloween Party at the Junior School, it is fun, rewarding, and a great opportunity to meet and get to know other parents in our community.
Full information about the YPA, who we are, what we do, and how you can get involved, is available on the school intranet YorkNet.

Please mark your calendars for these fun and engaging evenings, and join us for a couple of hours of discussion and casual conversation. All are welcome! Feel free to come to one evening or all of them in the year.

BOOK CLUB READING LIST - Fall 2023
September Book Club
Demon Copperhead, Barbara Kingsolver
A gripping read and recently nominated for the Pulitzer Prize Winner in Fiction. Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-coloured hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relaying in his own distinctive voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labour, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through it all, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favour of cities. Loosely based on Charles Dickens’s David Copperfield. Read more: https://www.pulitzer.org/winners/barbara-kingsolver
October Book Club
Ducks, Kate Beaton
An unforgettable graphic memoir, a New York Times Notable Book, and Winner of Canada Reads 2023. After university, Kate Beaton heads out west to take advantage of Alberta’s oil rush, part of the long tradition of East Coasters who seek gainful employment elsewhere when they can’t find it in the homeland they love so much. With the goal of paying off her student loans, what the journey will actually cost Beaton will be far more than she anticipates. Parent advisory for this graphic novel: mature themes.
All of these parent lead initiatives have been uploaded to The York School calendar with the Parent Connects icon.
REVIEW - YORKTALKS PODCAST - PARENTS AS PARTNERS
A school's parent community reflects the school's values and goals. York School parents promote a strong, cooperative and welcoming community and, through the York Parent Association (YPA), of which all parents are members, organize events and other engagements (in-person & virtual) that increase spirit, camaraderie, and connection. Host Natasha Estey speaks with parents Karen Schultz, Talei Kunkel, and Glenn Asano along with Michelle Golfman, Associate Director of Advancement, to learn more about how parents are partners at The York School.
